McGowan hails rebirth of rising star Rogic

Recalled Australia defender Ryan McGowan says the return of playmaker Tom Rogic gives the Socceroos a sprinkling of star dust for next month's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Tajikistan.

The right-back witnessed the rejuvenation of Rogic first-hand, with the 22 year-old midfielder capturing man of the match accolades as the Hoops breezed past McGowan's Dundee United 3-1 on Saturday night (AEST).
Back in the Socceroos fold for the first time since picking up his 12th cap in the 3-0 loss to Spain at the 2014 World Cup, McGowan, 26, is convinced that if Rogic can sidestep further injury setbacks, there is no limit to his potential.

“Everybody realises what a huge talent he is and it will be up to him, now that he is fit again, to force his way back into the team," McGowan said.

“I truly believe he can turn out to be real star at Celtic if he can stay injury free and anybody who has seen him  before in full flow, will know what a great player he can be."

“For him now, getting his match fitness up is the key. In the Celtic games I’ve watched this season that has played in, he's done really well and got on the scoresheet and I’m delighted for him.”

Rogic, who was forced out of Australia's plans at the eleventh hour in Brazil after failing to prove his fitness, has started in three of the Bhoys’ first five games of the Scottish premiership.

The star midfielder is also heavily in contention to keep his place for Celtic's UEFA Champions League play-off 2nd leg match in Malmo on Wednesday morning (AEST).

“Like me, Rogic hasn’t been involved since the World Cup for the national team,” McGowan said.

"Obviously the competition is intense for places with the boys going on to win the Asian back in January and it’s going to be hard to break in."

“But strength in depth is something that Ange Postecoglou has focused on and as players it’s up to us to try and add something different and really push the boys who are playing.”
Another Scotland-based Australian back in the mix is midfielder Jackson Irvine, who has made an eye-catching start to the new season with Ross County and is looking to add to the single cap he won off the bench against Canada in 2013, just before Postecoglou's appointment.

Irvine, 22, has started in all five games for fifth-placed Ross County this season, after making his loan move from Celtic a permanent switch during the transfer window.

“I played against Ross County at end of last season and Irvine did well and is doing good things there again,” McGowan said.

“We play each other next weekend, just before going into Socceroos camp and it will be good to catch up with him in the flesh. He’s definitely a player on the up.”

While he was unable to convert a gilt-edged chance to score against Celtic, the versatile McGowan has nonetheless excelled for the Tangerines this season.

With regular first choice Ivan Franjic not selected in Postecoglou's 23-man squad for the qualifiers against Bangladesh in Perth on 3 September and in Tajikistan five days later, McGowan is competing with the out-of-season Tarek Elrich for a starting spot.

“I am playing mostly right back right now… I don’t have a preference for that or centre back. "I just enjoy playing, I am not too worried. Either position is good," McGowan said.

“The same goes for Australia ... I am just delighted to be called up again and have a great chance to impress and push for some game time. I want to make sure I train hard and try to catch the manager’s eye.”

McGowan said he was excited to be recalled for the Socceroos and never takes his selection for granted.

"I am just over the moon to get the call. When you are not involved it’s just one of those things that inspires you to keep working hard at your club and if the chance comes again you grab it," McGowan said.

"Nobody should ever take getting selected for granted.  At the World Cup I was involved in all three games, coming on against Chile and starting against Holland and Spain."

"It's the biggest honour in football to be called up for your national team and is one of the hardest to get."

The 26 year-old has no doubts Australia will be well prepared for the duel challenges of Bangladesh and Tajikistan.

“The Socceroos management team are among the most professional people I’ve ever worked with and there will be no stone unturned," McGowan said.

“We're looking forward to playing on home soil and then travelling for the second game."

"Sometimes these places are difficult to go to, but we have a job to do. For teams such as Tajikistan, it’s among the biggest games they play... coming up against Asian champion and we're a huge scalp for these sorts of teams."

"That puts added pressure on us and a little bit more freedom on them. These can sometimes be danger games but we believe we have good enough players to go there and get a result."
