Oar targeting England in quest for new club

Clubless Australia winger Tommy Oar is focusing on England as he looks to secure his future - but has not ruled out the Middle East, Asia or the A-League as fallback options in his increasingly urgent hunt for a new home.

Having parted company with FC Utrecht in May in pursuit of a new challenge after five years with the Eredivisie outfit, Oar, 23, has not been short of suitors from Europe and beyond.

Earlier this month he even came agonisingly close to signing for Athletic Bilbao - conqueror of Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.

There has also been strong interest from Feyenoord, Hellas Verona, Fulham, Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion – but with no end product.

Oar, who remains strongly in the running for another Socceroos call-up for next month's 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Tajikistan, is refusing to panic.

Speaking from the Netherlands, he told The World Game: "The situation is not ideal  ... there's no point in hiding the fact but I am doing everything I can to stay as fit as possible.

"I will just keep going and wait for the right opportunity to come up. For sure, it's frustrating but at the same time there's not too much I can do about it.

"I have always wanted to play in England and my main focus is mainly on the UK now. There's still a few weeks left in the transfer window and of course as I am free agent, I am not restricted by any windows anyway.

"I am hoping by the end of the month everything will be well and truly sorted out."
Should that not be the case then Oar, who has already rejected approaches from the Middle East, will spread the net wider.

"If the situation doesn't change in the next few weeks I would be more open to offers from Asia, the A-League and the Middle East," he added.

"I would never rule anything out but I am confident I will get things resolved soon. Everyday there are opportunities from around Europe, but they are not really the ones I want. I would be more worried if there was nothing coming up."

Despite the uncertainty over his club future, it's believed that Oar - who came off the bench to score Australia's winner against Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek in June with an unerring finish - will be named in Australia's squad on Wednesday for the looming qualifiers against Bangladesh and Tajikistan.

He has been keeping fit with a personal trainer aligned to the Netherlands national team, and is confident he can do a job for Australia.

"I've been working and training hard and while I am not match fit, I feel I am in quite good condition," he added.

"Given my current situation. it would be a massive bonus for me to be selected for the two qualifiers. Every time you play for the national team you always do your best, and if picked I would owe it to the boss to make sure I justify his decision.

"I was happy with my influence on the game in Bishkek, but I am not thinking about that much. Every camp has its own challenge and every game poses a completely new challenge."

Oar holds a Spanish passport through his paternal grandparents, who are of Basque heritage. And that is what brought him to the orbit of Los Leones coach Ernsto Valverde at a club which still adheres to a strict policy of signing only players with Basque backgrounds.

However, after long deliberation, the proposed move was scuppered by the club's hierarchy, with Oar admitting his lack of Spanish language skills did not help his cause.

"It was obviously disappointing that it didn't work out. The coach was very keen and for a few weeks there I was hopeful that it would happen. But unfortunately it didn't go ahead because of the club's policy," he explained.

"It would have been the perfect step ... they are a fantastic ambitious club but it wasn't to be.

"There have been a few others things which have not clicked yet also in other countries, but it's not over yet and I am staying optimistic and waiting for the right opportunity."

Oar amassed 102 appearances for Utrecht, but was frozen out in the latter part of the campaign after informing the club he wanted to move.

Looking forward rather than back, he added: "It's been difficult but I am hoping that in a month's time when I am playing again I will be able to laugh off the situation. But right now, I am not in position to do that."
