Amini's Socceroos dream alive and well after Randers run

They have started the Danish Superliga season on a winning note and the Australia Under-23 linchpin has made a swift and telling impression since stepping from the shadows of Borussia Dortmund’s second team into the bright light of Denmark's top flight.

Amini insisted the move was motivated by his desire to attract the attention of Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou, as the campaign to qualify for the FIFA 2018 World Cup gathers steam.

But Amini, 22, knows he still has much to do to convince Postecoglou of his potential.

He has hit the ground running in Europe over the past month though, while incumbent Socceroos like Tommy Oar, James Troisi, Oliver Bozanic and Tomi Juric, hunt for new clubs as valuable days tick away ahead of the 3 September qualifier against Bangladesh, at Perth’s nib Stadium.

“I am always hoping to be called up but it’s up to Ange of course,” said Amini.

“I left Dortmund because I wanted to play regular football in a good European league and to fulfil my ambitions of playing for the Socceroos, that's always has been my driving force right the way through.

“It’s why I came to Randers FC and I am finally getting that first team football I need to go to the next level. I know it will take time to reach the top. But it’s looking good and I am very happy right now.”

The clash against Bangladesh is followed five days later by the long-haul trek to Tajikistan, and the Socceroos are fully aware of how daunting a destination it will be after squeaking to a 2-1 win over neighbouring Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek last month.

Amini, who was replaced in the 67th minute of Monday’s 3-0 victory over Nordsjaelland with his team already in the box seat thanks to a hat-trick from Swedish striker Viktor Lundberg, said: “It’s a very physical league, the level is good and I am beginning to settle in."

Amini, one of the more technical players in a team of high work rate, endurance and commitment, has started life on the left side of midfield but is likely to be switched to a more natural central role for this weekend’s derby against AGF Aarhus.

“As long as I am playing regularly, and not sitting on the bench, it’s not important where I play,” he said.

“While it's a physically demanding league there are also a lot of skilful players too here in Denmark. Their Under-21 team have qualified for the Olympic Games and their senior team is also strong.

“We are chasing a top three spot this season and I am pretty sure we can accomplish that.”

Fellow Aussie export Awer Mabil, who has signed for Danish champion FC Midtjylland, was an interested spectator as Amini played his part for Randers against Nordsaelland, while former Perth Glory keeper Jack Duncan was on the bench.

“Awer has done really well to get a five year deal with the defending title holder and it’s good to see him getting the chance for some exposure in Europe also," Amini said.

“It’s what a lot of young Australian players need, to be thrown in at the deep end.

“I remember when I left at the age of 18 a lot of people probably thought I left the A-League too early but at the end of the day when you look at players like Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka, they left when they were young.

“I am sure that if you ask any player if they can leave for Europe as early as possible they will take that chance.

"Of course, it’s not all roses and flowers and you will have hard times and maybe not play but you have to fight it out.

“In my case, I didn’t really know how to defend when I left Central Coast Mariners for Germany and I also had to learn how to head the ball properly.

“They are working on me here in terms of fitness, it takes time and doesn’t come over night but I am getting my endurance levels up now because it’s going to be a demanding season.”
