Matildas move up one spot in FIFA rankings

Australia enjoyed tremendous success at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, knocking out Brazil in the round of 16, but the quarter-final appearance has done little for their world ranking.

Despite beating Nigeria and Brazil, and playing out a 1-1 draw with Sweden, the Matildas gained just one spot in the FIFA world rankings, moving up to ninth, switching positions with Norway.

As a result of its World Cup win the United States reclaimed the top spot, relegating Germany to second.

USA beat Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals in Montreal which guaranteed it top spot, with Silvia Neid's team dropping to second.

France, which was beaten on penalties by the Germans in the quarter-finals, holds on to third place, just ahead of the Japanese despite the latter making the final.

England, which finished third in the tournament after beating two-time world champios Germany in the third-place play-off, has been rewarded with its highest-ever ranking of fifth.

Sweden suffered the biggest drop, losing two spots after failing to escape their group at the World Cup and is now seventh.

The biggest mover is Cameroon, the African side moving up 10 places to 43rd position after its run to the last 16 where it was defeated by China.
