Simen Juklerod was shown a red card for using homophobic language in the second half of Baerum SK's 3-2 defeat against Sandnes Ulf in a second-tier game.
The player maintains he did not deserve to be sent off but his club has criticised the midfielder, insisting it has 'zero tolerance' in such matters.
"There was a second I was not thinking, and said the second word (gay), yes," Juklerod told Norwegian newspaper aftenbladet.
"Of course it's completely lame. But I still think that's not a red card."
However, his club has a different view.
"We do not accept our players calling other gay or similar. They say a lot of crap in matches but we have zero tolerance for stuff," a statement on the club's Twitter account read.
"It was unfortunate that it was said, and we take self-criticism for the event. The case has also been taken internally."
