Ryan urged to wait as Euro heavyhitters circle

Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan's future is expected be resolved this month, with his agent confirming there is interest “from all the big leagues in Europe” for the shot-stopper voted Belgium’s best for the second year in succession.

While Liverpool and Roma have both been scouting the 23-year-old, his representative, former Danish international Mikkel Beck, said a broad spectrum of clubs were monitoring Ryan, who has a buyout clause in his Club Brugge contract should a leading club from England, Spain, Germany or Italy bid for him.

“It’s not a question of whether Maty will leave or not because he will … it’s more about whether it will be this (northern) summer or next,” said Beck.

“It’s about the clubs that are following him deciding whether they think he needs one more year in Belgium before they go for him, or do they go for him now.

“That’s what the speculation is all about. Maty is ready to take the next step – I know that, he knows that. But he also knows that Brugge is still a good place for him to stay for another year.

“There have been no concrete discussions but there is plenty of interest out there. With certain clubs Maty is on a list of three or four keepers that they are looking at and they will make a decision within the next three to four weeks.

“It’s a goalkeeper we are taking about and it’s a vital position for clubs and they don’t just rush into things. They have to make sure.

“I have just told Maty to keep calm and be a bit patient. We are in a waiting position.

"Maty cannot do more than he has done over the past two years. He has performed magnificently well.”

Beck, who played in England’s top flight with Middlesbrough, insisted that despite Ryan's relative lack of height in goalkeeping parlance – he stands 181cm tall -  that is not a stumbling block to a career in the Premier League.

“That would be like saying Sergio Aguero is too small for the Premier League … it’s not about height. It’s about quality, timing and technique and personality and Maty has all those," he said.

“You can’t just bring in a tall keeper to that level if he doesn’t have the right personality. Maty, for me, can play in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France. He can play anywhere.

“He has what it takes. If a club really wants Maty they will not say ‘if he had been two centimetres taller we would have gone for him’.

“It’s not those two centimetres that will make the difference in the end. The best example is David Ospina, who Arsenal brought in (to compete for the top spot with Wojciech Szczesny) and he has done really well (making 18 league appearances last season).

“He’s around the same height as Maty (182cm) and he has done really well for Arsenal. So, I don’t think clubs think about this (height) any more.

“They look at the qualities you have, not what you don't have. Maty has shown it with Australia and with Brugge that he is one the best coming out for crosses.”

Ryan’s laser accurate distribution, whether by hand or foot, his reflexes and agility have set him apart again this season for club and country.

“In regard to his distribution he is one of the best in Europe, maybe even the best,” said Beck. “You can talk about Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but then we are comparing him with the goalkeepers from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

“In distribution, I don’t see anybody better.”
