Remy stunner the difference as Chelsea trumps Sydney FC

It took a sensational Loic Remy strike to separate the sides as Premier League champion Chelsea edged to a 1-0 win over an impressive Sydney FC at a packed ANZ Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Frenchman's moment of brilliance came in the first half as his unstoppable shot settled an intriguing and entertaining exhibition match watched by a crowd of 83,598 - few of whom will have gone home disappointed.

The only mystery was that there were no more goals in a duel which flowed from end to end, with Sydney more than stepping up to the plate against Jose Mourinho's multi-million dollar men.

“It was a great experience. Our young boys were exceptional and they set their own standards for next year, they have shown they can do that in front of 85,000 people," said delighted Sky Blues coach Graham Arnold.

"If they can perform like that then a lot of them have bright futures. I couldn’t be prouder of the boys.

"In the last five minutes we had three great chances. It would have been a great thing if we could have got a draw against the English Premier League Champions.

“Again Sydney FC have shown they are the biggest club in the country and that they lead the way in the A-League.”

Spanish marksman Diego Costa encompassed his quality in one mazy sixth minute dribble which took him past three bemused Sydney defenders before he was thwarted by grateful goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic as the tone for the match was shown early on.
But the Sky Blues, showing far more enterprise than they had displayed in losing 1-0 to Tottenham at the same venue on Saturday, asked some serious questions of Chelsea's defence during a bright opening spell largely dominated by the champion of England.

The ever dangerous Eden Hazard showed a glimpse of why he was voted English football's player of the year when he darted to the byline and squared across goal for Remy who fired just wide as a near full strength Chelsea began to assert its authority.
Playing without fear or inhibition, Sydney got forward at every opportunity and Alex Brosque flicked the ball wide from Rhyan Grant's cross before teenager Alex Gersbach tricked his way past Cesar Azpilicueta at the byline before cutting the ball back to Robert Stambolziev who blazed his shot high and wide.
A moment of unbridled inspiration from Remy on the half hour underlined the chasm in quality between the A-League and the top of the Premier League when he cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed rocket from the edge of the area which ripped into the far corner of the net past a helpless Janjetvoic to give the Blues the lead.
Costa, who was forced off with injury approaching the break, might have added a second four minutes later when he burst into the area before sending an angled drive just wide with Janjetovic beaten as Sydney struggled to deal with pedigree performers in its midst.

Sandwiched between all that Chris Naumoff found himself one-on-one with keeper Petr Cech, whose save broke to Brosque and his effort was acrobatically cleared away by Branislav Ivanovic and then Terry Antonis brought a smart stop from Cech as Sydney refused to be overawed.
Sydney continued to impress after the interval with its patient passing game.

Antonis led the charge for the Sky Blues and Cech had to be alert to keep out the midfielder's stinging 62nd minute shot.

Sydney had an escape in the 68th minute when the excellent Gersbach shouldered Remy's shot off the line with Janjetovic well beaten.

Janjetovic came to the rescue in the 78th minute to palm away substitute Andreas Christensen's shot after beguiling lead up play by Hazard.
The Sky Blues had an 88th minute goal from Sebastian Ryall ruled out for a handball in the build up as they fought hard to square the ledger.

It was the ultimate compliment to Sydney that the London giant was hanging on grimly at the end to protect its slender lead and was relieved to hear the final whistle.
