FFA shows 'courage' to dump Blatter

Football Federation Australia has shown great courage and moral values by distancing itself from embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter, former Soccer Australia chairman Remo Nogarotto said.

On the eve of the vote to determine the next FIFA presidency, the organisation is reeling from another scandal.

FFA, for many years a strong supporter of Blatter, has throw its support behind the president's only challenger for the most powerful position in sport: prince Ali Bin Al Hussein.

"Profound change within FIFA is needed as soon as possible to address issues of governance and transparency," FFA chairman Frank Lowy said in a statement.

"The board of FFA has reviewed the manifesto for change proposed by Prince Ali and believes it provides the basis for a fresh start for FIFA."

It is a dangerous move because Blatter is likely to win the election and because it goes against Asia's policy of backing the president.
Nogarotto has applauded FFA's brave decision that is risky and could be costly.

"FFA may be playing a dangerous game in the eyes of some but it is playing a card that it has to play," Nogarotto explained.

"In the line of what happened with our World Cup bid and the single vote that we received and in the line of FFA's governance of the game in Australia it feels it would be ironic and disappointing if the same rules of governance and transparency that are used in Australia are not the same as the ones the world governing body subscribes to.

"All the stakeholders of the game in Australia have a strong view about the inappropriateness of the behaviour of FIFA.

"I applaud the FFA for its courage and its insistence on the same principles and standards of governance to be applied at world level.

"The alternative was to demonstrate moral bankruptcy.

"The geo politics of football must reign supreme over the morality of conduct.

"FFA clearly won't vote for Blatter and the consequences of that have to be managed.

"Remember, regardless of whether Blatter gets up or not, the world of football and its conduct will never be the same again.

"The game will come under immense scrutiny from the media, sponsors and fans.

"This will be the turning point of international football."

Nogarotto led Australian football from 2002 before he made way for Frank Lowy's so-called dream ticket in 2003.

He recalled then Soccer Australia's dealings with the world governing body.

"The problem we had in my time was that we were a small and impoverished football nation and we really did not understand the geo politics of football," he said.

"All I can say is that we established a strong relationship with Blatter, who changed our qualification path to the World Cup. Our vice-president Basil Scarsella was very close to Blatter as a member of FIFA's executive committee.

"I suppose the first time we awoke to the possibility that there might be something not quite right with FIFA was just before the 2002 World Cup.

"Blatter came under significant attack during the annual congress from (then FIFA secretary-general) Michel Zen Ruffinen.

"It was then that I started raising an eyebrow on the practices of FIFA before we got to the point that we are at today."

Nogarotto said football fans around the world are feeling that enough is enough.

"It's not just the FFA, reasonably-minded football people all over the world have had a gutful of what's been happening at FIFA," he said.

"Courtesy of the American justice system we now have uncovered allegations of significant substance.

"This has been happening for a long time, at least two decades."
