Superstar teams help, not hinder, A-League, claims Sticca

International match promoter Lou Sticca has refuted suggestions that the arrival of an armada of world football powers for exhibition games in Australia has the potential to undermine the A-League.

With Villarreal due to face Adelaide United on Friday night and Tottenham Hotspur clashing with Sydney FC on Saturday in the first of a winter wave that includes Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Roma, Sticca, of the Tribal Sports Group, insisted that the high profile arrivals will enhance the local product rather than erode it.

"When you have clubs of this calibre coming to Australia it will only boost the industry," said Sticca.

"There are nine games (between the end of May and July) … that's nine stadiums filled, that's nine match fees Australia clubs will earn, nine sets of fees that FFA earns, plus TV rights.

"There are plenty of people who will come to these games who perhaps haven't taken advantage of the A-league to date - and it will expose them to the game.

"There is no downside at all. These matches stretch the season and keeps fans involved longer."

Sticca, the man previously behind the arrival on Australian shores of Juventus, Liverpool, Celtic and David Beckham's LA Galaxy and responsible for the Tottenham and Chelsea coups, believes the nation is now a destination firmly implanted in the minds of the world's top teams and will remain a part of their expansion plans into Asia and beyond.

And it's no simply an opportunity to part local fans from their money.

"The truth is these clubs make more money if they stay at home," he said. "If they organise a friendly at their own grounds the financial rewards are greater.

"It's a fallacy that coming out to Australia is simply about the cash. Honestly, that is not the case at all.

"It's part of a bigger picture: all clubs and leagues are looking to grow their fan base globally and it's a question of servicing their fans in Asia and Australia is part of Asia.

"It's not just these teams coming specifically to Australia. They are coming to Asia and we are now firmly a part of that.

"Also, a lot of these clubs have regional sponsors and they have contractual obligations to come to this part of the world to service the corporates.

"The bottom line is that is a great chance for Australian fans to get up close and personal with some of their heroes."

While Australia has been inundated with an unprecedented abundance of talent this winter Sticca said it was an anomaly.

"Every year is different, it all depends on the international calendar and the availability of full teams.

"That said, Australia is now a destination very much on the radar of touring teams."

With Liverpool and Villarreal to play in Brisbane and Adelaide; Manchester City, Real Madrid and Roma will be in Melbourne; and Tottenham and Chelsea will be in Sydney, the clubs are spreading the net wide, with Sticca adding: "These clubs see Australia as a major source of online merchandise sales, they have substantial social media followers here and lot of fans who will go to the games."

The games at Sydney's ANZ Stadium featuring Spurs and Chelsea against Sydney FC three days apart have sold over 150,000 tickets to prove the appeal of the glamorous London duo.

Sticca added: "We have a secure destination that boasts great facilities whether it's hotels, or training grounds.

"There's also the knock-on effect in terms of tourism revenue. People are always looking at new places to go on vacation and when you see these types of clubs coming out it keeps us at the forefront of people's thinking.

"These games provide a boost for the local economies of the host cities … hotels, restaurants, taxis."

Next on Sticca's hit list is wonder club Barcelona – but he can't say when.

"If it’s not me, somebody else will be talking to them. If Australia is lucky enough to have hosted Juventus, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Tottenham and the rest, then it's only a matter of time before all the big clubs have a turn at coming out.

"I am fan first and foremost. I get a buzz being close to these players and coaches and seeing how the fans react and all the love and passion you see. I am living the dream."
