Maclaren hoping for imminent Glory release

Young striker Jamie Maclaren is hopeful of getting a release from his contract with Perth Glory as early as this week.

Pressure on the club to release Maclaren is growing, with the players' union - Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) - telling The World Game it was confident the dispute between the player and the club will be resolved in the player's favour.

Maclaren's manager, Paddy Dominguez, told The World Game it wasn't fair other players were being released from the remainder of their contracts with the club while Maclaren was not.
After leading the competition for most of the season, Perth was barred from competing in the A-League finals series by Football Federation Australia as part of the club's penalty for cheating the salary cap.

The penalty also eliminated any chance the team had of qualifying for next year's AFC Asian Champions League.

Glory players were naturally upset at the club because their hopes of winning the A-League championship had been dashed and Maclaren was among those.

Maclaren and his management approached the club to seek a release from the year left on his contract, but this was denied and he then filed a breach notice against the club through the PFA.

He is alleging the club breached the "material, non-financial" clause in the standard playing contract.

The breach notice was filed on 14 May and the club has 21 days in which to respond.

Since then, Perth has agreed to release Youssouf Hersi from the remainder of his contract and it has been reported that star goalkeeper Danny Vukovic had also been released.

Neither the club nor Vukovic has confirmed the release, but speculation has been rife for more than a week now that Vukovic wouldn't remain at Glory next season. Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers are believed to be among the clubs interested in acquiring his services.

It is also understood Perth has informed defender Scott Jamieson he is free to leave the club as well, despite being contracted next season.

And there is unconfirmed speculation Perth captain Michael Thwaite may not be at the club next season either.

Perth has announced the signing of former Wanderers defender Antony Golec on a two-year deal.

It is anticipated there will be further contact between the Maclaren camp and the Perth management early this week.

PFA president Simon Colosimo told The World Game: "Jamie issued the breach notice on our advice and with our support, but despite that we always advise and recommend that the player, in situations like this, sits down with the club and tries to resolve it. Sitting down to resolve it can at least preserve relationships.

"I'm sure it will be resolved in Jamie's favour, if not prior to the 21 days running out then beyond that. The PFA is very confident in Jamie's position."

Dominguez told The World Game that Maclaren was keen to gain a release as soon as possible so that he could begin sorting out his future.

The 21 year-old finished the season with a flurry of goals and would be a target for multiple A-League clubs, with overseas offers a possibility as well.

"Other players don't seem to have much of a problem in being allowed to leave Perth when they still have time left on their contracts," Dominguez said.

"So I don't understand why regular first-team players would be given permission to leave and Jamie Maclaren is not, after he sat on the bench for most of the season.

"It doesn't seem fair that one player is prevented from going when other players are apparently allowed to go. I don't know the details, but I can read the news and all I can see is Hersi gone, Vukovic gone, Thwaite allowed to go.

"I hope that common sense will prevail and maybe Perth this week will take the opportunity to revisit their position, but that is at their discretion."
