FFA stands firm on Jets licence and wants new owner by next season

Head of the A-League Damien de Bohun has defended the actions of Football Federation Australia, saying it had no choice but to strip control of Newcastle Jets from Nathan Tinkler.

De Bohun, in Newcastle for a crisis meeting with staff at the beleaguered club, was strong in the face of veiled threats from Tinkler in the media on Thursday.

"Our goal will be to have a new owner and chairman in place by the start of next season," De Bohun said.

"All I know is when staff and players haven't been paid we have no choice but to act the way we have."

De Bohun did have good news for the players and staff though, insisting they would be looked after.

The 15 players currently contracted to the Jets have all been offered new contracts.

The FFA has guaranteed those staff who were not paid, will be.

"Today is a fresh start for the Newcastle Jets and football in NSW," De Bohun said.

"Yesterday afternoon FFA revoked the licence of the Newcastle Jets and today we have been meeting with all the staff.

"We made a number of important decisions today, the most important being that all the players will be provided with like-for-like contracts and the staff who were not paid last week will have their obligations met for the next month."

While the players have been kept on and the staff paid for now, the coaches face a different path as the FFA undertakes a large-scale review of the club's operations.

"The coaching staff are still employed by Hunter Sports Group, they're not coming across at this point," De Bohun said.

Head coach Phil Stubbins was only given a lukewarm endorsement by de Bohun.

"I've spoken to Phil personally this morning, he's been on a mission from the previous owner of the club ... I have made it clear that we're stopping to reassess everything right now and get clear on what the future might hold."
