Dundee United boss flags Jets takeover talks with FFA

A consortium headed by Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson is set for imminent talks with Football Federation Australia over acquiring the licence for the Newcastle Jets in the wake of Nathan Tinker being stripped of his ownership for the club.

The consortium tabled an offer in excess of $3.5 million to embattled former mining tycoon Tinkler last weekend before Tinkler placed the club in voluntary administration on Wednesday.

And with FFA moving to seize back the licence from Tinkler later in the day over several breaches, including the non-payment of wages to players and staff, the consortium is now ready to deal directly with the governing body.
Thompson, who first expressed an interest in taking control of the club last November, will be sounded out on his intentions as the FFA seeks a sustainable ownership structure for a club which Tinkler left $2.7 million in debt.

His group last had dialogue with FFA five months ago and in the light of the licence now no longer being held by Tinkler is likely to offer a revised figure.

When contacted on Wednesday, Thompson was guarded over what the figure might ultimately be, stating: “I would prefer to deal with business matters privately, rather than in the public domain.

"I will say that football has an exciting future in Australia and I have been watching things from afar for some time now.

"It's a very interesting market and it's a growth market, and with the national team winning the Asian Cup it's exciing times for the game in Australia and the sport is on the up there."

A statement from the SPL team clarified: "Dundee United is not involved in talks with the Newcastle Jets, this is a personal venture for the chairman as part of a consortium.

"Any involvement of Mr Thompson in this or any other venture is entirely his prerogative and the board, which he remains fully committed to, is focused purely on Dundee United delivering a positive end to the season and building for next season."

Thompson has cut $13 million in debt down to less than $2 million through prudent management and the judicious sale of Tangerines players since taking a majority share in the club back in 2002.

The club has also reached back-to-back Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup finals in 2014 and 2015.

Socceroos defender Ryan McGowan is also on its books.

Thompson believes that, given the opportunity, he can use his pedigree of working within tight budgets to achieve success to good use in reinvigorating the Jets, which finished with the wooden spoon this season after a disastrous campaign on and off the field.
