Brisbane Roar crisis talks hold key to club's future

Chairman Chris Fong is locked in crisis talks in Indonesia over the future of Brisbane Roar, but will soon be able to provide Football Federation Australia with a definitive answer on whether the Bakrie Group intends to continue backing the club.

Fong jetted to Jakarta on Thursday evening with the club in turmoil in the wake of the exits of managing director Sean Dobson and football director Ken Stead and on-going question marks over its future under the Indonesia-based Bakrie conglomerate.

The Bakrie Group has already divested itself of clubs in Belgium and Uruguay as it buckles under debts reported to be region of $10 billion, with Roar caught in the headwinds of those financial problems.

Fong, who has assumed the day-to-day running of the club, declined to comment before departing for Jakarta but is known to be committed to doing his utmost to persuade his bosses at the Bakries to continue funding the Roar while it seeks a fresh cash injection from investors.

Brisbane’s players were back in training on Thursday to prepare for their 3 June exhibition match against Spanish club Villarreal with Dutchman Frans Thijssen to remain at the helm until after the game, when he will sever ties with the club.

Roar has been hit with a loss of $2.25 million this season and Fong said last week he was in favour of “slashing and burning” to try and bring the figure into more manageable proportions in a bid to “run the business sustainably”.

According to News Ltd, the club is also behind in Suncorp Stadium rental payments and agents’ fees.

It is believed the handler of marquee man Thomas Broich may also be pursuing a cash claim through FFA.

News Ltd also stated that The Coffee Club, the club’s key sponsor, will consider withdrawing its $650,000 backing when the current deal ends on 30 June.

Players are still being paid on time, while the situation with other staff is less clear.

FFA is closely monitoring developments and is hopeful it will not have to step in to finance the club, as it did in 2010 and 2011.

It remains reluctant to comment on the situation until it hears back from Fong early next week.

An affiliation of Brisbane-based businessmen have signalled an interest in assuming ownership of the club should the Bakries pull out, but are unwilling to deal with any residual debts.
