Sydney chief laments smaller grand final venue

Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata said it was an opportunity lost for football that the A-League grand final had to be played at AAMI Park when the clash between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC next Sunday could fill a much bigger venue.

The game would have been staged at Etihad Stadium had it been available, but after FFA pushed its season back a week to include the break for the AFC Asian Cup the bigger Melbourne venue became unavailable for the grand final due to the AFL season draw.
The AFL refused to change its scheduling to accommodate the potential for an A-League grand final in Melbourne and even the Victorian Government becoming involved in talks at the request of FFA failed to remedy the situation.

"I don't know the ins and outs of the discussions (with the government), but I would have liked to have thought they could have helped," Pignata told The World Game. "I just can't believe they (the government and the AFL) couldn't agree to move the game.

"For us, it would be great to play at ANZ Stadium, which is free, and you would get 60,000 people, but I can understand Victory saying it's their home game and they deserve it. That's the model we work on and we know that from the start of the season.

"It's just a bit disappointing, to be honest, that the Victorian government and the FFA couldn't come to an agreement. It's a grand final, it's the biggest game of the A-League, and while AAMI Park is a great stadium, it can't hold much more than 25 or 26,000.

"I think it deserves a big crowd to witness a big game."

Asked if it was an opportunity lost for football, Pignata replied: "It is, it's disappointing. I'm not saying they should move the game, but it will be played at a venue where another 30,000 can't get in.

"But it's a grand final and if it means playing at AAMI, we'll be there."
