Contract speculation no distraction for Ibini

Sydney FC star Bernie Ibini says constant speculation about his playing future is not bothering him at all, as he prepares to do his thing against Adelaide United in front of a big home crowd on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old attacker is coming off contract and is the subject of huge interest from other clubs, including Newcastle Jets.

Sydney wants to re-sign him, but is under the sort of salary cap pressure that could let a rival club get under its guard and whisk him away with a too-good-to-refuse offer.

It could easily be enough to distract some players on the eve of an A-League semi-final, but Ibini is one of the coolest cats in the competition. The calmness that allows him to maintain focus despite whatever is going on around him seems to be doing its job.

"If I was younger it would be playing on my mind," Ibini said of the contract speculation. "But I've matured a lot and if people want to say stuff and speculate on my future, that's out of my control.

"I'm just concentrating on the finals with Sydney. That's all that matters to me at the moment."
Ibini said he had a close friend who advised him on contract negotiations and that "we sort through it all together". He did not wish to comment on the speculation regarding the Jets.

Asked if he would like to stay with Sydney, all things being equal, Ibini replied: "Yeah, I've had a very good and enjoyable season with Sydney. If everything works out, we'll see what happens. I could possibly stay there, but I don't know yet.

"There's a lot of things to weigh up and stuff like that. I don't know what my Chinese team wants to do yet. My loan to Sydney FC ends this season, but I don't know what the situation will be for next season."

Ibini was referring to Shanghai SIPG, which he joined after winning the A-League championship with Central Coast Mariners in the 2012-2013 season.

The club allowed him to return to the A-League on compassionate grounds, after the death of his father, and he rejoined Central Coast on a loan deal for the second half of last season. He switched to Sydney this season, again on a loan deal.

Loan-deal fees will mostly come under the salary cap from now on under new A-League rules, which could affect Sydney's ability to compete for Ibini's signature unless his Chinese club was to grant him a release altogether from the final year of his contract.

"I'll worry about my future after the season is over," Ibini said.

Ibini believes that the only way he is different as a player now to when he was playing in the finals for Mariners two years ago is that he knows what is coming this time.

"I'm still very excited and looking forward to it, just like I was at the Mariners," he said. "This is what we play for. But I'm used to it now, that's probably the only difference. I know what to expect in the finals. But I'm no less excited."

Asked if he feels on edge because of the added pressure associated with a knockout game, Ibini replied: "No, I feel pretty relaxed. Even when I was younger I was pretty relaxed before games. I'm just trying to not put any more pressure on myself, because there's already pressure.

"You know it's a big game. You don't want to put extra pressure on yourself.

"To me it's just a normal week," he said. "I do everything the same. I've got other things to do to take my mind off football - listen to music, play a bit of FIFA, catch up with some friends, just the normal stuff.

"Sometimes you need to get away from football and just relax and not put your mind into overdrive thinking about it."

Much has been made of what happened the last time Sydney and Adelaide met, on April 4 in Sydney. Adelaide won 1-0, but Sydney had by far the better of the game.

The combination of great goalkeeping by Adelaide's Eugene Galekovic and some wasted opportunities by Sydney decided the result.

Ibini said he and the rest of the Sydney players and coach Graham Arnold didn't need to over-analyse what happened in that game.

"It was just one of those games," he said. "Galekovic had a tremendous game and it just didn't work out for us. I'm sure the mindset of everyone in the team after the game was that if we play that well, nine times out of 10 we'll get the win.

"That's how we look back on it and hopefully that loss will make us be more clinical about putting our chances away this time around."
