Socceroos star Luongo focused on promotion amid transfer talk

Australia's AFC Asian Cup hero Massimo Luongo is looking to put conjecture over his future to one side heading into the League One promotion play-offs, admitting talk of an impending move to a bigger club has affected his mindset in recent weeks.

The Socceroos’ playmaker is looming as a key figure for Swindon Town ahead of Friday’s (AEST) first leg of the play-off tie against Sheffield United, with a Wembley duel against Preston or Chesterfield the prize for the winner.

And Luongo is hell-bent on shutting out thoughts of a possible switch to the likes of Aston Villa, Crystal Palace or West Ham as he looks to produce a match-altering display against the Blades to keep the Robins on course for the Championship.

“It (the speculation) has all been playing on my mind a little bit and I just have to force myself not to worry about it," Luongo, who was last week named in League One’s Team of the Year, said.

“I need to fully focus on Swindon and do my bit in hopefully three matches that will get us promoted.

“It has all been a distraction to some extent… I do my best not to think about it but it's human nature to ponder over these things when you are alone and think about the future.

“But I need to forget about all that and focus on the play-offs.

"Some fans have been criticising me a bit for my performances (of late) but I always do my best in every game.

"In truth, for a few months now we haven’t been that convincing as a team and haven’t really been doing what we are good at and it's been difficult as a team to get going."

However, Luongo predicts he will play his part in getting the Robins airborne against the Blades.

“I like to be a driving force in getting the team going forward and I think come Thursday I will be able to do that in a heated match because I will be coming in fresh," he said.

“It was always my hope that we’d play Sheffield Untied because traditionally we don’t win at Bramall Lane and they don’t do well at the County Ground, so something will have to be give and it be exciting.

“There might be a sell out crowd and the atmosphere is going to be buzzing."

Luongo said flak from fans upset that he is likely to be playing elsewhere next season is “to be expected”.

“It doesn’t really get to me,” he added. “I learn from it and just move on really. A lot of them have really supportive throughout the season.

“I’ve been a bit deprived of football lately and when I have played I have tried to do as much as I can to make up for it. Perhaps I have been trying to do too much and to force things.”

Since returning from the 2015 Asian Cup, where he was voted player of the tournament, Luongo has been beset by several niggling injuries and unable to string a run of matches together and even train properly.

“It’s been a case of getting over one and then another comes up,” Luongo, who has suffered groin, hamstring and ankle issues said.

“Maybe it’s not so surprising because we played a lot of football over a short amount of time at the Asian Cup and coming back to England I didn’t get any rest and maybe it took its toll a bit.

“Initially, I was fine but then I was out for a couple of weeks, came back and got injured again and it's been hard to get my momentum back.

“But play-off games are different… once I am fired up for a game the lack of momentum won’t matter.”

Luongo - rested in the Robins' 2-2 draw against Leyton Orient at the weekend - was front and centre of Swindon’s last appearance in the play-offs two seasons ago when he scored but also gave away a penalty against Brentford as the Bees triumphed over two legs to end the Robins promotion hopes.

“That was a big experience… we didn't get to Wembley but hopefully we can go one better on this occasion," he said.

“I’ve never played there and I’d really like to – and now we have that chance again. It means a lot to the boys and would be great to do it together as a team.”

On his Team of the Year accolade - voted by fellow players - Luongo added: “It’s a top honour and something you’re proud to have in your record.

“Now it’s my job to go out and show people why I was named in the team of the year.”
