Decision looming for Glory young gun Maclaren

Perth Glory's hot-shot young striker, Jamie Maclaren, is expected to make a decision on his future in the next couple of weeks.

Maclaren's manager, Paddy Dominguez, told The World Game he had advised his client to spend the coming days carefully considering his options.

"Jamie Maclaren remains a contracted Perth Glory player at the moment," Dominguez said. "Although there are very high levels of interest in Jamie, we would need to discuss with Perth the possibility of Jamie pursuing any other opportunities should he be interested in doing so.

"Traditionally, Perth Glory have never stood in the way of players moving on and I would hope that would remain the case for Jamie if it were required.

"Jamie's performances with extremely limited game time for Glory have not gone unnoticed and whatever the future holds for him he will hopefully get a lot more time on the pitch and progress his career at club and national level.

"He is a young, talented, natural goal-scorer and he looks like he will have a very bright future if he can continue to develop and play like he has thus far."

Contracted Perth players and Professional Footballers Australia have recently been in discussion over what the legal options were for the players in the wake of the salary cap penalties being handed down.

The PFA advised the players to first talk to the club's management about the situation before they considered doing anything else.

The World Game reported last week that Perth would appear likely to struggle to stop any players angry at the club over the salary cap drama from getting out of their contracts if they wished, based on what has been referred to as a "material, non-financial" breach of contract clause.

Football Federation Australia barred Glory from competing in the finals series as part of the club's penalty for cheating the salary cap.

The penalty not only prevented the players from competing for the A-League championship, but also eliminated any chance they had of qualifying for next year's AFC Asian Champions League.

PFA chief executive Adam Vivian said any player who wished to challenge his club over a material, non-financial breach would first have to give the club 21 days to remedy it.

The World Game put it to Vivian at the time that, unlike a financial breach of contract which can be remedied, there was no apparent way Perth could remedy the players missing out on the finals and losing the chance to qualify for the ACL.

Vivian replied: "At this stage, yes, I think that's a fair assumption, however the process would be that you've still got to afford the club the opportunity to respond.

"They've got to be afforded every opportunity to go through a process, so whilst it may be considered that they can't remedy it under the circumstances, they still have to be afforded the opportunity."

Maclaren, 21, spent most of the season playing from the bench behind Perth's imported striker, Irishman Andy Keogh.

But despite getting limited game-time he still displayed the ability to score goals under pressure.

After temporarily being away from the club whilst scoring freely for the Olyroos at the qualifying tournament for the AFC Under-23 championship, Maclaren returned to Glory with four rounds of the A-League left and coach Kenny Lowe put him in the starting side alongside Keogh.

Maclaren finished the season with a flurry, scoring a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Melbourne City in round 26 and another goal in the 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in the final round.

He finished the season as the competition's equal-sixth highest goal-scorer with nine from his 20 games, only seven of which he started. In a recent interview, Maclaren said he had become frustrated by his lack of game-time this season.

Maclaren, who has one more year on his contract at Glory, has a great pedigree for a young player. He spent time in the youth and reserves team set-up at English club Blackburn Rovers, during which time he represented Scotland Under-19s in two games.

He went on to represent Australia at the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, before moving on to the Under-23 team which has the chance to qualify for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Maclaren is originally from Melbourne and if he became available he would appear certain to attract interest from within his home city, with two A-League clubs there, as well as from other A-League clubs and potentially abroad.

It remains to be seen whether Maclaren chooses to stay at Perth or inquires about a possible release.
