Young gun Mason says Tottenham will turn on style in Australia

English Premier League giant Tottenham Hotspur is coming to Australia to “put on a show” in its May clash with Sydney FC, according to breakthrough midfielder Ryan Mason.

In the first instalment of a London double act, which also features champion-elect Chelsea against the Sky Blues three days later, Tottenham is expected to attract a crowd in excess 65,000 to ANZ Stadium.

Mason insists that Mauricio Pochettino’s men will be in full combat mode in a match which falls six days after the conclusion of its domestic season against Everton.

“We know that Sydney FC are having a big year in the A-League and are pushing hard to get to the grand final,” the 23-year-old, who made his England debut in Italy last month, said.

“I am sure they are going to be up for this match just as much as we are. They are one of the biggest teams in the A-League and the way the game has been growing in Australia, it’s going to be a game where we’re going to have to be switched on to produce what we expect of ourselves every time we play.

“It’s something we’re all looking forward to… we’re expecting a really tough test and we are determined to put on a real show for the fans.

“I know it (the A-League) is on the rise. Obviously cricket and rugby league seem to be the biggest sports over there, but more and more people are taking an interest in football and the players are getting better all the time, which is great to see.”

Spurs followers from across Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia will converge on ANZ Stadium for the 30 May clash, with the southern end of the ground rebranded ‘Park Lane’, in tribute to the section of White Hart Lane populated by its most avid fans.

It has had to be expanded into the surrounding bays three times to accommodate a 16,000-stong army of supporters who will turn ‘Park Lane’ into a sea of white as the teams battle for the AIA Cup, with penalties required if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

“We’ve been following things on social media and to be honest it’s remarkable to have so many fans on the other side of the world coming to see us,” Mason added.

“They are going to expect us to show the sort of commitment you get each week in the Premier League and we will aim to live up to that.”

Born close to Spurs' home gorund, Mason emerged from Tottenham’s youth system where he played alongside Socceroos starlet Massimo Luongo in the club’s Under-21s and then again at League One Swindon last season.

He rates Luongo – who has attracted interest from Aston Villa and Crystal Palace – as more than ready to scale steeper peaks as he eyes a move to a bigger club.

“He’s a great player and friend, and back when we were at Spurs together you could see he had a lot to offer and had so many facets to his game,” Mason said.

“He’s done remarkably well with club and country – and when he was voted the player of the tournament at the Asian Cup, I wasn’t surprised at all.

“I definitely think he can play at a higher level. It’s probably only a matter of time now.”

One whose time has already come is 30-goal Tottenham sensation Harry Kane – who on Sunday was crowned the PFA’s Young Player of the Year – and will arrive in Australia with intense expectation swirling around him.

“I get asked all the time about Harry and I’m delighted for him,” Mason said.

“We came through the youth ranks at Spurs together and he’s always had a great work ethic and also the ability to go all the way.

“His finishing is excellent and so is his all-round game. He’s now getting the credit he deserves for all the hard graft he's put in and I only seeing him getting better and better.

“I think the fans in Australia are going to enjoy watching him in the flesh.”
