Ryan taking marathon season in his stride

Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan has had to change his training schedule to be able to cope with the business end of the most demanding season of his young career.

Ryan could end up playing more than 70 matches for club and country this season.

Ryan, who plays for Club Brugge in Belgium, is currently Australia's most successful footballer.

He has won the AFC Asian Cup 2015 in January, the Belgian Cup in March and is nicely placed to win the Belgian Pro League.

Brugge is also in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, where it is still unbeaten.

Ryan's team took a major step towards winning the domestic championship by coming from behind to beat Anderlecht 2-1 at the weekend to maintain top spot in the playoffs, with seven matches to go.

"It was a big win against our biggest rival," Ryan said.

"We fell behind in the first half but thankfully we changed the course of the game with two late goals.

"It was the type of match where we players needed to stand up and be counted.

"This year the individuals of the team have done well in sharing the responsibility of stepping up in the big games and it was again the case at the weekend with the substitution of our young striker Oulare coming on and changing the game."
Ryan even admitted that a rare mistake he made while the team was one down against Anderlecht could have been costly.

"I received a ball from a throw-in and I played it across the penalty box to our centre-half but the pass was intercepted by an Anderlecht striker who fortunately hit the ball wide," he said.

It was Ryan's 60th match of the season, if you include the 10 games he played for Australia.

"In the four years since I have been a professional I have never been as busy with my football as this season," Ryan said.

"I have had to prepare differently for games to take into account the number of games I am playing for club and country.

"I just have to get the balance right.

"I've realised the importance of being physically and mentally ready for each game after such a hectic season like I'm having.

"That's why I have had to adjust my training load and warm-ups a little, to get that freshness back.

"I need to be match fit and well prepared all the time but I'm a competitive person so I will get there."

The way things stand, Ryan's total of matches this season should be 37 league games, five cup games, at least 16 UEL games and 11 internationals for a total of 69.

That's a staggering amount of football for a person so young and relatively inexperienced.

But Ryan, who won the A-League with Central Coast Mariners in 2013 before embarking on a career abroad, is not complaining.

"I consider myself a lucky man and I intend to make the most of my good fortune," he said.

"It's never-ending pressure but, don't get me wrong, I would not trade my situation with anything else. I'm enjoying it."

Ryan could take his match tally beyond 70 if Brugge manages to get past Dnipro this week.

The Ukrainian club held Brugge to a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Belgium and would consider itself favourite to reach the semi-finals.

But Ryan, who made a difficult diving save late in the game against Dnipro to keep the tie very much alive, has not lost hope.

"There are two ways to look at the 0-0 draw," Ryan said.

"I reckon it was good that we did not lose and did not concede at home.

"We will go into the second leg with a positive approach.

"Hopefully we will score first and put all the pressure on them."
