Sainsbury in the dark over World Cup rivals

Australia defender Trent Sainsbury admits he knows very little about Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, two teams that stand in the way of the Socceroos as they attempt to reach their fourth straight FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos have been drawn against Jordan, Bangladesh and the two former Soviet republics in Group B of Asia's qualifying path for the finals in Russia in 2018.

The team that finishes first in a round-robin starting in June will proceed to the final phase of qualifying.

The draw was greeted with optimism in Australia but Sainsbury, who has established himself in the Socceroos' set-up, is not quite sure what to expect.

He certainly will be using Google to find out more about the teams he and his teammates will have to face very soon.

"It's definitely an interesting draw," said Sainsbury, who plays his club football for PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands.

"Some teams I thought I would never play and some countries I thought I would never visit ... but that's football.

"It takes you to places you only hear about.

"In complete honesty I can tell you that I had never never heard of Kyrgzstan but I was aware of Tajikistan.

"It's exciting to see what they bring to the table in terms of football.

"I definitely will be googling the two countries to find out more about them and their football.

"Not every day you have the chance to visit such remote places so I'll be doing my research to find out more about their customs and culture."

Australia is expected to win the group but to do that it must beat the Jordanians, who have caused the Socceroos some problems in recent years, particularly in 2012 when they beat Holger Osieck's team 2-1 in Amman.

The Socceroos play the Jordanians in Australia on matchday 10 next March.

Sainsbury feels that the Socceroos have an added responsibility now that they are Asian champions.

That includes treating all opponents with the respect and dignity they deserve.

"We must pay respect to every team we face," he said.

"We are the champs now and we want to have that label for generations to come.

"Everyone will be looking to beat us as we are the now the benchmark.

"Having said that I don't believe we care too much which team is put in front of us.

"We will play in our way and they will have to worry about us. We wont change for them."
Australia will kick off its qualifying campaign on matchday two (it has a bye on matchday one) on 16 June when it faces Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek. Then it meets Bangladesh in Perth.

It should be an exciting coming home for West Australian Sainsbury, who left Perth in 2009 to join the Australian Institute of Sport before signing for Central Coast Mariners in 2010.

"It may sound like a cliche but it's a dream come true for me personally to represent my country in front of people whom I love," he said.

"It brings a smile to my face just thinking about the people who have helped me get to this stage."

Sainsbury said he was thrilled by Australia's performance against Germany in last month's international in Kaiserslautern.

"The Germany game (2-2) was a big testament to how far we have come as a team in such a short period and it was a proud moment to be a part of," he said.

"The Macedonia game (0-0) was difficult for two reasons. Firstly, they didn't want to come past the halfway line and, secondly, the pitch didn't allow us to express ourselves with the free flowing attacking football we like to play.

"But it will help us in the long run and we will take away only positives from these experiences."
