Matildas tour hailed a success

A six-week tour of Europe has the Australia squad happier, healthier and ready to launch an assault on the FIFA Women's World Cup.

It's been a hefty investment by Football Federation Australia into the national women's side and coach Alen Stajcic says it's produced a terrific return.

The Matildas have won five of their eight matches in the build-up to the June tournament, but Stajcic says their 1-1 draw with Scotland last week was the highlight.

"The first half in particular was sensational," he said.

"We kept possession and played our style of attacking football, creating so many chances.

"All things we'd been working on at training, so it was great to see it come off in a game against decent opposition."

By design or coincidence, that style is similar to the one that's brought the Socceroos their recent success.

"We've got a lot of variety in our attack and a lot of pace," Stajcic said.

"Having good attacking fullbacks, good movement and pace up front makes us a really strong attacking force."

The Matildas will need plenty of weapons in their arsenal come June's World Cup, drawn in a "group of death" with top-five nations Sweden and United States.

Australia's winning record in 2015 is proof of the squad's development.

But more than improving on-field form, there are gains in the squad's off-field spirits.

Stajcic took the role a year ago this week after Dutch coach Hesterine de Reus was ousted after squad disharmony.

A four-week spell without an official warm-up - matches against Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire and Wales fell through - meant matches with local Italian sides, near where the Matildas were based, filled the gap.

Stajcic was wary of cabin fever setting in, but rather the opposite was the case as the relationship between all parties improved.

"It can go either way when you spend that much time together," Stajcic said.

"We were really conscious of the need to improve the culture ... really create that family atmosphere and I think we went a long way down the track.

"It all comes back down to what we want to achieve."

The group still in contention for selection in the 23-woman squad will alternate between home training and camps together in Canberra and Sydney over the next six weeks.

Stajcic hopes he can still play a farewell match or two in Australia during mid-May before potential practice matches in Vancouver.

"We're trying to negotiate a farewell match with a couple of countries now before we leave," he said.

"That's in the pipeline and hopefully we can nail it down."
