The False 9: Round 25 - Burns and 'Becks' have something in common

A link between Nathan Burns and David Beckham; Eugene Galekovic goes from Superman to Bizarro; Bernie Ibini on that special goal; and we have some magic from Mossy, Ian Moss. It's all here in the False 9.

It was a pretty lame penalty attempt by Socceroos attacker Nathan Burns for Wellington Phoenix against Melbourne City - but don't let that make you think he shouldn't be taking spot-kicks.

Burns proved his nerve earlier in the season - against City, coincidentally - when he smashed a penalty home but then had to take it a second time because teammate Roly Bonevacia had encroached.

He smashed the second attempt home as well, putting it in exactly the same place - high and to the right of the goalkeeper.

The City 'keeper that day was Andrew Reymayne. On Sunday, it was Tando Velaphi.

Whether Burns thought City would be expecting him to go to the 'keeper's right again and he was trying to fool him, only he knows, but his shot down the middle didn't have enough height or pace on it and Velaphi, who had started to go right, easily saved it.

False 9 is tipping Burns won't be putting it down the middle again, next chance he gets.

The greatest players in the world sometimes miss penalties. Here's David Beckham putting one into row Z.
If the salary cap doesn't fit, the club has to wear it

Perth Glory was never going to be allowed to play in the finals series if it couldn't prove to FFA it wasn't guilty of the major charges - "payments outside of the standard player contract" and "payments to a player's family member".

Technical breaches you can often understand - the cap can be a complex beast - but deliberately going around it, as Glory was found guilty of doing, is a different story altogether.

Suggestions by some football identities that a fine would have been sufficient or a points penalty could have been delayed until next season are ridiculous. You can't have information a club has knowingly rorted the cap and then let it remain in a position to win the competition.

How did that feel?

Sydney FC attacker Bernie Ibini is a natural right-footer, but he reckons he scores more goals with his left foot and he added to that list with a cracker against Perth Glory.

The ball sat up for him after his first touch and he smashed it home, giving Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic no option but to watch the ball fizz by.

False 9 asked Ibini if he got a bigger buzz than usual out of a goal like that. He replied, with a laugh: "I've got to say every time you score a goal you get a buzz, so this was no different!"

The big fellow loves the sounds of Chris Brown, so False 9 brings him some.
Football Bizarro man

One week after being the toast of the A-League for his brilliance performance against Sydney FC, Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic became toast.

The Socceroos squad member from last year's World Cup produced the howler of howlers when he emerged from his penalty box only to misjudge the bounce of a ball from Brisbane Roar.

After a desperate attempt to clear it with his boot as Jean Carlos Solarzano tried to capitalise for the opposition, Galekovic ended up punching the ball into the back of his own net.

It was '' stuff from the Reds' 'Superman' in goals.

Galekovic was also later beaten near-post for a goal - never a good feeling for a 'keeper - but he will bounce back. Before that happens though,

It can be a cruel, cruel game.

Man of the hour (and a half)

Let's hope, for the sake of Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss, that he doesn't go the Galekovic route and follow his outstanding effort against Melbourne City with a shocker next round.

Moss produced a series of high-quality saves to ensure Phoenix stopped the rot that had come with two straight losses by at least picking up a point.

"We started a bit shaky, a bit nervous perhaps, but when we hit our straps there we looked good," Moss said. "The last couple of weeks were horrible, to be fair, so it's a good way to bounce back and get a point at a tough place to come."

In recognition of his fine display, False 9 would like to present some classic Moss, of the Ian variety, that is.

Perth Glory players detailed how difficult it was to go out and play only a few hours after receiving the news they had been kicked out of the finals.

It looked at the time like the ball from the last-gasp chance to Melbourne City had come direct off Erik Paartalu's head and just over the crossbar, but this terrific shot suggests Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss may have gotten the slightest of touches to ensure it didn't go under.
Power rankings (last week in brackets)

1 Sydney FC (2) We know it was difficult for Perth, but it could have been difficult for Sydney, too, if the players didn't have their heads screwed on. They did.

2 Melbourne Victory (1) Losing at home to last-placed Newcastle when you're gunning for the Premier's Plate just shouldn't happen.

3 Melbourne City (3) Slightly the better team against Wellington, but failed to take any of its chances and had to accept a draw.

4 Brisbane Roar (7) Excellent performance to beat Adelaide on the road after playing a midweek AFC Champions League game in Korea Republic.

5 Wellington Phoenix (6) Had its chances, including a missed penalty in away draw with City. Has taken just one point from last three games.

6 Perth Glory (4) After being told of the salary cap penalty a few hours before the game it was only natural the team struggled against Sydney.

7 Adelaide United (5) There is a growing list of games in which it has let itself down. Losing at home against a tired Roar outfit is very poor form.

8 Central Coast Mariners (9) Suitably marked the last home game for club stalwart John Hutchinson with a 1-0 win over the Wanderers.

9 Newcastle Jets (10) Registered the biggest upset of the season by beating Victory 1-0 on the road. The Jets thoroughly deserved it, too.

10 Western Sydney Wanderers (8) Recovered from falling behind early to create plenty of chances against Central Coast, but couldn't convert any of them.

Can't wait for...

A double dose of Brisbane Roar versus Melbourne Victory at Suncorp Stadium, starting with the washed-out game from round 18 on Wednesday and backed up by the scheduled round-26 match on Saturday.

Seventh-placed Brisbane will still consider it has to get past sixth-placed Melbourne City to make the finals at this stage. It won't accept that Perth Glory is not going to play in the finals unless that club has failed with all appeal options open to it.

If Victory wins both clashes, it will almost certainly clinch the Premier's Plate ahead of the final round.
