Adelaide primed to test weary Roar's stamina

Adelaide United is sure about one thing going into Saturday night's crucial home game against Brisbane Roar - it is going to find out just how tired its opponent's legs are after it played a midweek AFC Asian Champions League game in South Korea.

Roar lost the game 3-1 against Suwon Bluewings, seriously damaging its chances of advancing from the group stage, and the players flew to Adelaide via Singapore on Thursday to prepare to face an opponent which loves playing a fast-paced, possession-based game that tests its rivals' stamina.

Adelaide star Craig Goodwin says his team will try to force the pace of the game to see if Brisbane wilts.

"We've got to come out of the blocks very fast, which is what we try to do every game anyway," Goodwin said.

"We've got to pile the pressure on Brisbane. It's like any other game in terms of how we've prepared, but with it being so tight among the leading teams on the competition table and only a few rounds to go, the result becomes even more important.

"It's a real opportunity for us, at home. Something we can't afford to do with the table being so tight is drop points at home between here and the finish.

"But it's not going to be an easy game, regardless of the travelling they've had to do. Hopefully, for our sake, there are a few tired legs there among them.

"I think it will definitely be a game where we control it and have the majority of possession, and then we just have to be patient, because if it is like that and Brisbane drop back a bit and defend, the goal might not come in the first half.

"We just have to be patient and take our chances when they do come."

Adelaide remains in the thick of the race for the Premier's Plate, or at least a spot in the all-important top two.

It began this round just one point behind leader Melbourne Victory.

The teams that finish first and second after 27 rounds get the first weekend of the finals off and a home game in the second week, for a place in the grand final.

"It is extremely close and extremely volatile as well," Goodwin said. "It's possible to go up or down by two or three spots based on the results in just one round.

"For us, it's about picking up maximum points in our last three games and seeing if that's enough to get us first place."

Goodwin says that while teams concentrate on performance, it is only natural for players to have a sneaky look at the competition table at this time of the season - especially when the race is as tight as it is  now.

"Players will say they don't look at the table, but it's so close to the end of the season now and every result is so important and every team wants that top spot," he said.

"It's a matter of who can hold their nerve the best from here, I guess. Our game plan against Brisbane won't be any different from the other two times we've played them this season.

"Hopefully, we can come up with the goods at home this time."

Adelaide beat Roar 2-1 in Brisbane on 12 October, but lost 1-0 at home against Roar on December 12.

In last weekend's away game against Sydney FC, Adelaide wasn't at its best. Sydney had most of the chances, but couldn't score. Adelaide eventually came up with the only goal of the match.

Goodwin says that result just balanced things out a bit for when they had been dominant in several games this season and come away with a draw or a loss.

"There have been games this year where we played fantastic and missed so many chances," he said.

"We dominated teams but couldn't put them away, so it felt quite rewarding to be able to put just one chance away and win the game off that.

"In terms of areas we need to improve in, keeping more possession in our opponent's half is one.

"In our last two games we didn't do enough of that, which meant we didn't control the tempo of the game as we would have liked.

"Against Brisbane we have to be better at that if we are to get anything out of the game."
