Roar suffers ACL setback with Suwon drubbing

Brisbane Roar suffered what could be a decisive 3-1 defeat at Suwon Bluewings in the AFC Champions League on Wednesday, leaving the A-League side with a mountain to climb to progress from Group G.

All the goals in Suwon's convincing win came in the second half, through Kwon Chang-Hoon, Seo Jung-Jin and Yeom Ki-Hun, with Luke DeVere's late effort proving nothing more than consolation for the Roar.

The victory moved the second-placed Bluewings three points clear of their A-League opponent in the group with two matches remaining and Brisbane facing a tough trip to leader Beijing Guoan next.

Roar suffered a blow before kick-off with Shane Stefanutto withdrew from the warm-up and was replaced by Corey Brown at left-back.

Suwon had the best early chance when a Seo Jung-Jin header from a set piece was palmed away by Jamie Young on 18 minutes.

The home side again came close just before the break. A miss-hit Young clearance went straight to Lee Sang-Ho inside the area.

After twisting and turning the Korean's shot was saved by the Brisbane goalkeeper before James Donachie had to clear a follow-up effort from Jong Tae-Se off the line.

Roar's only genuine sight of goal in first period came in stoppage time with a menacing Brown drive going just wide of the post.

Suwon 's pressure finally told five minutes into the second half as it capitalised on another Roar error.

Brown conceded possession deep in his own area, allowing Jong Tae-Se to tee up substitute Kwon Chang-Hoon who jinked his was into the area before firing past Young and inside the far bottom corner to make it 1-0 to the visitor.

Brisbane almost hit back immediately as a clever Thomas Broich ball found Brandon Borello in the box, but the 19 year-old's well-struck shot hit the side netting.

The home side doubled its lead just before the hour. Lee Sang-Ho squared it to Seo Jung-Jin, who cut back and placed his shot inside the near post.

The game was virtually put beyond the reach of the Australian side on 65 minutes when Yeom Ki-Hun curled a superb free-kick into the top corner from just outside the penalty area to give Suwon a 3-0 advantage.

Roar had something to cheer 15 minutes from time when Broich swung in a free-kick and Luke DeVere rose unopposed to head in from close range and pull one back for the visitor.
Brisbane continued to push forward, but it was unable to create any clear-cut openings and must now win its remaining matches in the group and hope other results go its way.

Roar coach Frans Thijssen was unhappy with the way his side failed to hold the ball in the first half.

“We are disappointed with the result because in the first half we were on top and the better team,” he said.

“We were confident for the second half but because of mistakes, we gave the game away.”
