The False 9: Round 24 - Lowe jumps to Keogh's defence

Marc Janko dressed as the Easter bunny; Phil Stubbins likened to Kermit the Frog; A fired-up Kenny Lowe and another yellow for coloured-card collector Nigel Boogaard headline the week's A-League activity.

Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe didn't like it when a reporter prefaced a question by suggesting Irish striker Andy Keogh had been having a "barren run" ahead of scoring against Newcastle Jets.

Lowe jumped in before the actual question had been asked and said: "Yeah, terrible run. I think he's second-top scorer in the league, he's scored 11 goals, so he's having a nightmare. I hope he has a nightmare next year, yeah. Gee, mate, what a question."

Keogh had scored once in eight matches before the game against the Jets. False 9 can only assume Lowe felt to describe that as a barren run was to be dismissive of Keogh's overall season.

Glory is under enormous pressure because of an investigation into alleged salary cap breaches, which centre around payments to Keogh.

Lowe returned to his normal self after that, even providing a lengthy answer to a question about the investigation. Wellington Phoenix's Nathan Burns is actually the league's second-highest scorer, with 13 goals, but we'll forgive Lowe that oversight.

After all, he's a coach, not the league's stats man.

Boogaard-ing against red

False 9 must admit he is impressed by the ability of Nigel Boogaard to walk the tightrope and avoid a second yellow card in any match he has played this season.

Adelaide United defender Boogaard shares the league record for red cards with none other than Kevin Muscat, with five apiece.

Hard-man Boogaard received his seventh yellow for the season against Sydney FC, but yet again he managed to get to the end of the match without seeing a second yellow - and therefore, a red.

Will Boogaard hold the record on his own one day? We'll have to wait and see, but for the time being he's doing a good job of avoiding it.

In honour of the restraint being shown by Newcastle-born Boogaard, who is going home to join the Jets next season, we present Newcastle's finest rock and roll product - Silverchair - with a power-packed cover of the Midnight Oil classic from 1981, Don't Wanna Be The One.
Man of the hour (and a half)

Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic said he was in the "zone" when he produced an extraordinary performance to keep Sydney FC on zero.

After making a series of cracking saves and also providing an assist for the only goal of the match - to Adelaide attacker Awer Mabil, - Galekovic said: "You don't know during the game (just how well you're playing).

"You're in a zone of focus and you just try and stop everything coming at you and try and do all the right things. You realise after the game that you've made a few good saves when you look back on it."

After looking downfield Galekovic aimed a 60-metre clearing kick from the edge of his penalty box into the path of Mabil on the right and the young star did the rest, turning inside and launching a left-foot strike from just inside the box that gave Sydney FC goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic no chance.

"I saw him (Mabil) make a run and I just went for it," Galekovic said.

It's time to meet the muppets on The Muppet Show tonight
No-one likes being called a muppet, but Newcastle coach Phil Stubbins was nothing if not composed when asked about the sign displayed by Jets fans at halftime of the game against Perth Glory.

It read: "Enough failure lies and arrogance 10,000 fans demand the muppet gone".

Asked about it at the post-match media conference, Stubbins replied: "The fans are obviously disgruntled and disappointed. I'm not against anyone venting, they're entitled to do what they feel is right from their point of view.

"(But) it isn't really in support of the club, so as the head coach and somebody that is at the front, then that vent and that anger is going to go towards that specific person, which is myself."

It isn't easy being the Newcastle coach, just like it isn't easy being green.

Not sure if Sydney striker Marc Janko's wardrobe is full of gear like this, but if the rabbit ears and nose fit, then wear them!

The latest happy snap from Spanish superstar (and former Melbourne City guest player) David Villa in front of a New York City landmark.
Gone home
If you were wondering what Liam Miller was up to since he was last seen in the A-League, the 34 year-old former Perth Glory, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City midfielder is displaying his wares with Cork City in the League of Ireland.

It's obviously a far cry from his early days with Celtic and Manchester United, but a professional footballer in the twilight of his career must take his chances where they come and Miller has certainly made a good impression at his new club.

Cork is unbeaten and in second place after six matches, all of which Miller has played. The club's manager, John Caulfield, speaks highly of Miller, comparing him to Cork legend Dave Barry.

"Since the day he came off the plane from Australia, he's never missed a training session. His fitness level is incredible and he's just a pleasure to deal with," Caulfield said.

"In tight situations he always looks like a guy who has composure. He reminds me of Dave Barry - one of those guys who always seems to have time on the ball.

"Teams will be trying to have a pop off him and a snap off him but he's just kept his concentration and he's played superbly.

"But he's been at the very top and I'd be disappointed if he wasn't playing the way he is, to be honest."

Power rankings (last week in brackets)

1 Melbourne Victory (2) In the box seat for the Premier's Plate, leading the table with a game in hand and only three rounds left.

2 Sydney FC (1) Performed strongly in general play against Adelaide, but couldn't convert chances into goals and came away with nothing.

3 Melbourne City (3) Can feel reasonably good about getting a point in awful weather conditions on the road against the Wanderers.

4 Perth Glory (5) Not its best performance against Newcastle, but getting three points on the road was a very important result.

5 Adelaide United (6) It was more about stopping goals than scoring them against Sydney FC, but it gladly took the win.

6 Wellington Phoenix (3) Two straight 3-0 losses at home against fellow title contenders can do nothing for the confidence.

7 Brisbane Roar (8) Took out its frustration at recent results by returning to form with a 6-1 smashing of Central Coast Mariners at home.

8 Western Sydney Wanderers (9) Scored first against City but had to share the points in the end. Committed performance from a tired team.

9 Central Coast Mariners (8) Poor performance on the road against Brisbane shows just how far off the pace it is this season.

10 Newcastle Jets (10) Had its chances against Perth but didn't take them, which is not surprising for the lowest-scoring team in the competition.

Can't wait for . . .

Sydney FC can probably forget about an all-important top-two finish if it doesn't beat Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Friday night - even if Glory's alleged salary cap breach is subsequently proven and the team is prevented from competing in the finals via a points penalty.

Sydney FC dropped from second to fifth with its loss to Adelaide United. Mathematically, it would still be in the running for the top two if it lost to Perth, but we all know that once you start relying on mathematics things are getting desperate.

Competition leader Melbourne Victory, which has a game in hand, looks certain to finish in one of the top two spots and under this finals format no team has won the grand final without finishing first or second in the regular season.
