Rogic relieved to return to action after injury battle

He's missed a World Cup campaign and an Asian Cup win but Australia midfielder Tom Rogic says it was sweet relief just to finally get back on the field this week.

The 22-year-old made his first appearance for Scottish club Celtic in almost 18 months earlier this week, after back-to-back groin injuries kept him on the sidelines.

Rogic played the first half of the Hoops' development squad's 2-0 win against Motherwell and the former Central Coast Mariner said he hoped it was the start of a good run of games to revive his Socceroos career.

"It was a big moment for me," Rogic said on Friday.

"Nothing compares to playing a game at any level so to get back out there and play a free-flowing match and not have to worry about my injury and just get on with the match was a positive feeling.

"After so long it was nice to not worry about that but I'm not saying I'm 100 per cent fit - I still have work to do - but that's a big step in the right direction after a long time."

Rogic's last senior appearance with Celtic was in November 2013 before he moved back to the A-League on loan with Melbourne Victory last year to get game time before the World Cup.

But groin concerns persisted towards the end of last season, and he was cut from Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou's final squad in June.

Rogic said his long-awaited return was a big step in his recovery process and gave him motivation to get back to full fitness.

"At this point in my career I want to be playing first-team football," he said.

"But after being out for so long I'm just very happy to get some minutes, and I'm sure I'll play a handful of games coming up for the development squad to get those important minutes in the legs after not playing for so long.

"Hopefully I can just help them and contribute to their season and progress as well in the short-term and look to build on that."

Rogic has another two years to run on his Celtic contract.
