Postecoglou has been credited with restoring a winning culture to the Socceroos and the AFC Asian Cup 2015-winning coach revealed he looked to learn from teams and coaches in other codes on a daily basis.

"That's what I spend most of my time doing to be honest," Postecoglou said ahead of Tuesday morning's (AEDT) clash against FYR Macedonia.

"There's the coaching aspect of it that I'm pretty big on, but I spend my time studying and talking to as many people as I can.

"And more importantly than talking, listening.

"From my perspective it's about keeping your eyes open, your ears open and taking in what you can and drawing from other sporting teams, not just in Australia, but the best sporting teams from all codes."

Postecoglou singled out New Zealand's world champion rugby side as an example of a team with a true 'cultural core' - the feel of a club rather than a national team, something he's trying to develop within the Socceroos.

"I read a bit about what (coach) Stuart Lancaster was doing with the England rugby union team and he tapped into the fact that the All Blacks were the best in the world and there was something there that went beyond just playing for your country," Postecoglou said.

"There was something deeper than that in there.

"They're the best in the world in their code and that sparked my thinking to look into it a bit more deeply."

As well as adapting to a new style on the pitch, Postecoglou believes his players are embracing a change in culture.

During the Asian Cup campaign, players took turns in addressing the group about what it meant for them to be a Socceroo in what proved an emotional exercise at times.

"To create that (club feel), you've got to find some common ground amongst all these guys who are playing around the world and at different stages of their careers and having had different experiences," Postecoglou said.

"And there's a real cultural core there that I thought we could tap into which has worked really well for us."
