Olyroos move a step closer to Rio 2016 with Chinese Taipei win

Australia's Under-23 side is assured of at least a playoff place for the AFC U-23 Championship, which will decide the Rio 2016 Olympic qualifiers, after it defeated Chinese Taipei 4-0 on Sunday.

The Olyroos sit top of Group F on goal difference and will need just a draw against Myanmar in their final match to clinch an automatic spot to the AFC U-23 Championship in Qatar next January - which doubles as the final stage of qualifying for the Rio Olympic Games. A top-three finish there would seal its passage to Brazil.

Josh Brillante put Australia ahead before Adam Taggart tapped in from right on the goal line, after an impressive build up, to make it 2-0 just before half-time.

The Chinese Taipei goalkeeper made a number of good saves early in the second half but there was little he could do stop a stunning long-range strike from Jaushua Sotirio just before the hour that extended the Olyroos' lead.

On 78 minutes Australia added a fourth with Brad Smith netting from close range.

The comfortable victory moved the Olyroos to six points from two matches ahead of its final group encounter on Tuesday night.
