Lowe happy to take risks as Glory goes on the attack

Perth Glory has vowed to take more risks as it attempts to revive its top-two A-League hopes - and the early results are promising.

Glory's nine-match winless streak was brought to an end on Saturday night when it secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at nib Stadium.

Defender Josh Risdon was the hero with a 23-yard thunderbolt in the 88th minute, while Brazilian Sidnei and midfielder Rostyn Griffiths also scored second-half goals in the team's most-attacking performance in months.

The triumph - Glory's first since 2 January - kept the club in the hunt for an all-important top-two berth.

Glory coach Kenny Lowe's decision to pair winger Sidnei up front with striker Andy Keogh paid off, with the pair combining to give Perth some important attacking flair.

Lowe admitted his team probably went too defensive in recent months after its white-hot start to the season.

"When we were flying, we thought we were a little bit open and we needed to box it off," Lowe said.

"But I think we went a little bit too far and went too conservative. Andy was getting isolated, our wingers were working too deep.

"But we said now, 'We're in for a penny, in for a pound'.

"We're in a great position. let's go and take some risks and see where it takes us.

"All the players bought in. They were excited about it ... and it's worked for them."

Glory has a great chance to make further inroads when it takes on last-placed Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium on 6 April.
In contrast, Western Sydney faces a dogfight just to avoid the wooden spoon after slumping to its 15th loss of the season.

The Wanderers created plenty of chances against Perth, but they wasted two golden opportunities in the second half.

Although its A-League hopes are already shot, Western Sydney is still in the hunt to defend its AFC Champions League crown.

The defending champion sits second in its group ahead of a crunch clash with FC Seoul in Sydney on 7 April.

Coach Tony Popovic admits it's been tough to juggle both domestic and ACL duties, but it's been worth it.

"We've played three games a week all season. It's caught up physically with the players," Popovic said.

"We missed 50-odd days of training through this pre-season.

"But I'd love to win the Champions League again and have that problem again."

Popovic confirmed striker Mark Bridge has resumed running duties, saying the veteran is a chance to return from his pelvic/groin injury within the next fortnight.
