Adelaide star Carrusca might be out until the finals

Adelaide United may have walked away a 1-0 victor over Newcastle Jets on Sunday but its hopes of a top-four finish suffered a major blow with star playmaker Marcelo Carrusca to be sidelined for up to three weeks.

Carrusca scored the winner in the 28th minute but the Argentine was taken off with a quad injury late in the first half at Hunter Stadium.

Things got even worse for the Reds who finished the game with 10 men with Carrusca's replacement Nigel Boogaard stretchered off wearing a neck brace in the 78th minute after falling awkwardly on his head.

While Boogaard's injury appeared dramatic, Adelaide coach Josep Gombau confirmed he was given the all clear by medical staff.

Carrusca on the other hand, could be racing the clock to make it back before the finals with only four weeks remaining of the regular season.

The Reds' victory leaves them in fifth spot, but just a point behind Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory, who are all on 41, and only two behind leader Wellington Phoenix.

Gombau will now be without one of his strongest players for most of the run home beginning with next week's clash against the Sky Blues.

The coach revealed Carrusca will undergo scans on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

"He knows his body very well and he felt his quad and said he needed to go off," Gombau said.

"Normally this kind of injury is two to three weeks.

"It will be difficult. But a football team is not just one player.

"We will for sure miss him because he is a high quality player and one of the best in the team but others will get their chance."

Last time the two sides met the Jets suffered a 7-0 drubbing, the biggest defeat in the club's history.

Adelaide again came out of the blocks quickly on Sunday but the Jets, who grew into the game and had the best of the second half, proved far more formidable opponents this time.

Mitch Cooper, Enver Alivodic and Edson Montano all threatened to find the equaliser after Carrusca put the visitor ahead.

But despite dominating possession and creating more chances, it just wasn't to be for Newcastle.

"We should have won the game, we were the better team," Jets coach Phil Stubbins said.

"If no-one can see that that was a decent performance then I don't think we're watching the same football match.

"So for me, there's lots of pats on the back but the problem we have is not scoring goals."

Gombau had the opposite reaction, with the Spaniard not pleased with his side's showing.

"We got the result, but in terms of football and in terms of the way that we played, I think today we don't deserve to get the three points," he said.
