Postecoglou delighted with Australia's efforts

Coach Ange Postecoglou hailed what he described as Australia's most exhilarating attacking performance under his watch after the Socceroos pushed Germany to the limit in Kaiserslautern to earn a 2-2 draw in a match they could easily have won.

The usually self-contained Postecoglou bordered on the ebullient as he reflected on a night when, at times, it was Australia which looked like the defending world champion rather than Joachim Low’s men.

Postecoglou saw the performance, and the result, as further confirmation of the continuing rise of the Asian champion, which came close to embarrassing Die Mannschaft in its own backyard.

“I think that's probably as dangerous as we've looked going forward particularly against such a quality opposition and considering half the team got off a plane 48 hours ago, after flying here 24 hours, the commitment and effort of the players was fantastic," enthused Postecoglou, who more than lived up to his pre-match billing by opposite number Low as a man steering Australia in a progressive direction.

“We took the game to them, were really aggressive with our pressing and I thought we looked really dangerous every time we went forward.

"In the second half we had to defend a bit deeper which is only natural, they're a very good team but even then we had a couple of chances on the break and I thought our defensive work was very strong and Maty Ryan in goal was good when we needed it."

Trailing to a Marco Reus goal, Australia hit back through a James Troisi header in the 40th minute and then led thanks to a spectacular Mike Jedinak free-kick after half-time before substitute Lukas Podolski spared Germany’s blushes with a late leveller.

But that only told a fraction of the story with Australia making Germany earn every inch of territory as it used guile and trickery to create a host of chances which could easily have seen it leave the Fritz-Walter-Stadion victorious.

"It was just a team effort. When you play as well as we did and we pressed really well, we pressed together as a team and worked really hard to ensure that every time they tried to play out, we put them on the back foot,” added Postecoglou.

"I think it's 10 o'clock in the morning in Australia and everyone's going to work pretty happy, maybe some people aren't going to work.

“For us, it was a great honour to come here and play against the world champions. We have great respect for the German national team and German football and for us we're still a growing nation and football in our country is still developing.

“I think results, and more importantly performances like today, helps grow the sport and gets the whole country behind us."

Postecoulou singled debutant defender Luke DeVere for special praise, saying of the Brisbane Roar stopper: “It's a pretty tough place (to debut) and he's not even 100 per cent fit and looked a bit rusty at the start.

"But he grew into the game and both him and Alex Wilkinson were really struggling with cramp after about an hour.

“Wilco won that race, so I had to take him off and luckily DeVere just kept going and I know he's got it in him.

“The way he chased down Podolski at the end when he was racing through was an amazing effort, considering he got off a plane 48 hours ago, flying from the other side of the world.

“As I said, he's not even 100 per cent fit but he has a real will and belief and I thought he was outstanding."
