Low pays Postecoglou the highest of compliments

In a glowing appraisal of the work Ange Postecoglou has done with Australia, Germany coach Joachim Low said the Socceroos have evolved tactically from what he labelled as the 'British approach' they used in 2010, when the two nations clashed in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Low's fluent attacking team won that match 4-0, but, speaking on the eve of their international on Thursday morning (AEDT), the 2015 FIFA World Cup-winning coach said Postecoglou's team is a much different and more difficult proposition this time, citing Australia's AFC Asian Cup win in January as an example of how far they have come.

"It shows how strong Australia are that they beat teams like Japan [SIC] and South Korea at the Asian Cup," Low said. "It’ll be a good test for us as they never give up and they play a similar way to [Germany's 2016 European Championship qualifying rivals] Ireland and Scotland.

"They had their own style but since 2010 they have changed the way they play.
"They played in a British style in 2010 but now they try to play out from the back."
Low, who won't risk playing Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer owing to knee swelling, said he wants his team to use the Socceroos clash as a tune-up for its EURO16 qualifier against Goergia on Monday (AEDT), but qualified that by saying the match is not a foregone conclusion.

"We’ve had a long break and haven’t been together for a while," he said. "It’s an unfamiliar situation for us after failed to win a couple of games.

"That means that we have to win our next few European qualifiers as we have a tough autumn with games in Ireland and Scotland, as well as playing Poland at home. We want to gain momentum from the game against Australia to take into the game in Georgia.

"The team can’t just turn up expecting to win. You have to have patience after such a long break but we need to get results."

Low's sentiments were echoed by veteran midfielder Bastien Schweinstieger, who is set to make his first appearance as captain against the Socceroos.

"Australia aren’t an easy side to play against," Schweinsteiger said. "They will try to frustrate us and they’ll have confidence after winning the Asian Cup."
