Djite admits Adelaide's meeting with Central Coast is 'must win'

Bruce Djite has declared that if his Adelaide United side can't beat Central Coast Mariners at home then maybe it isn't deserving of the top-two spot it is chasing in the run down to the finals.

Djite always tells it as it is and the star striker believes Adelaide has got the right opportunity to break back into the winners' circle against Central Coast at Coopers Stadium on Thursday night.

The rest, Djite says, is up to the players.

"I think there's no doubt about it - this game is an absolute must-win if we want any chance of finishing in the top two this season," Djite said.

"There are still seven games to go and anything can happen, but if you can't beat Central Coast Mariners at home when you're fighting to try and make that top-two position yours, then you've got to ask yourself if you deserve that spot."

Adelaide's form has been inconsistent since coming out of the AFC Asian Cup break.

It began with a brilliant, 7-0 win over Newcastle Jets, but since then the team has gone loss-draw-win-loss-loss.

Those two most recent losses have seen Adelaide drop to fifth place, but the competition table is so tightly packed that it is still only three points from second and four points from first.

Djite says Adelaide has a paid a heavy price for conceding goals in quick succession in recent games, sometimes after it has spent a period of time in control.

"Certainly the last month or so hasn't been our preferred results," he said. "We haven't been our total selves if you like and that's been reflected in the results.

"We tend to dominate games much more than we have the last couple. We're playing not bad, we're playing OK, but I think we're copping goals in quick succession. Against Melbourne City, for example, and then Wellington, and that's really hurting us.

"In saying that, we didn't manage to score against Wellington, so, look, we're working on rectifying all of those things."

Last weekend, against Wellington, Adelaide conceded two goals in three minutes - from the 79th to the 82nd - in losing 2-0.

The week before, against Melbourne City, Adelaide led 1-0 but then fell behind to goals in the 52nd and 55th minutes. City added a late goal in its 3-1 win.

But the game Adelaide let slip more than any other was the last time it played Central Coast - on February 7 in Gosford.

Adelaide couldn't have been more in control than it was in that game, but a failure to convert chances meant it still only led 1-0 going deep into the match. Mariners scored goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes to record a shock win after having been dominated for the vast majority of the match.

"When this sort of thing happens it's a bit demoralising at the time because you've got the possession, you're right in the game and you're dominating the other team, which has to work extremely hard just to win the ball back and then try to retain the ball," Djite said.

"And then you cop a goal and you think 'OK, we can come back from that', but then you cop a second one two or three minutes later and it makes it very difficult to pick yourself up.

"We've succumbed to that in the last couple of weeks, no doubt about that, but, look, this game against Central Coast at home, in front of our fans, you know, the two losses that we've had in a row were both away games and now we're back at home.

"Wellington and Melbourne City made their home advantage pay and now it's time for us to do the same. We really need to win this game."

One of the key problems for Adelaide since the Asian Cup break has been the fact injuries have kept its star defensive pairing of Osama Malik and Nigel Boogaard apart.

The only time they have both been in the team during this period was against Newcastle. Since then, either one or the other has been out injured - and against Melbourne City both were out.

Boogaard returned against Wellington and Malik has been included in the squad for the game against the Mariners.

"Osama will definitely play some part in this game," Djite said. "Whether he starts or not, I'm not sure. It's up to the coach, what he does with the team.

"Osama and Nigel start the majority of the games for a reason. They're very important players for us and we have missed them and to have them back is certainly a boost for the team. In saying that, I think Dylan McGowan has done a fantastic job at centre back.

"I think when we have our best XI on the field, when we have everyone fit and the coach has got to make difficult decisions about who's going to play, it takes things up another level and you could argue we've missed that the past month.

"We have had a few injuries, but what team goes through the season without any injuries? It's part of the game and you've got to be able to deal with that and it's great to be able to welcome those boys back for hopefully the rest of the season."

Asked if coach Josep Gombau and the players had discussed just how important it was to win the game against the Mariners, or whether it was just understood, Djite replied: "It's just understood."
