Jets draw blank with Mariners in dour stalemate

A-League strugglers Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw in Saturday evening's F3 derby at Hunter Stadium.

Neither side possessed the killer instinct in a game of few clear cut chances and there was little for the crowd of just 7,991 to get excited about as the eighth-placed Mariners and ninth-placed Jets cancelled each other out.

There had been plenty of fire in the build up with both camps firing off barbs - but it all petered out on the pitch.

After a cagey start, the first chance of the game fell to Ecuardorian striker Edson Montano, whose well struck shot from the edge of the area was palmed away by Mariners keeper Liam Reddy.
Scott Neville was the next to test Reddy before new Serbian sgning Enver Alivodic added his name to the list with a toe-poke which the keeper parried away from danger.

The Mariners' first opening fell to Nick Fitzgerald but he failed to execute his shot with any real conviction and keeper Ben Kennedy made an simple save.

On the half hour Nick Montgomery connected much more cleanly from the edge of the area to bring a diving stop from Kennedy as the Mariners sparked to life.

Mitch Cooper thought he had given the Jets a 38th-minute lead when his blast from outside the box was tipped onto the underside of the crossbar by Reddy.

But match officials waved play on and subsequent TV replays appeared to confirm that the whole of the ball had not crossed the line.

Korean Lee Ki-je picked out Alivodic in the 51st minute but he shot wide of Reddy’s right post.

At the other end, Mariners left-back Josh Rose miscued in front of goal with his weaker right foot in the 64th minute to let the Jets off the hook.

A minute later Kennedy came to the Jets rescue with a flying save to keep out Fabio Ferreira's curling shot fom 20 metres out.

But, in the end, neither team could find a way through as the Mariners' slender play-off hopes took another big hit.

With the A-League put forward as a potential testing ground for world football governing FIFA to trial goalline technology, Mariners coach Phil Moss was all for the move despite the call going the visitors' way on this occasion.

"I'll never understand why in this day and age why we don't have goalline technology at least," Moss said.

"I've suggested in the past maybe even a video referee for anything that happens in the penalty area, because they are massive decisions that can make or break results and make or break careers.

"But from the replays I saw, even the commentators, who got to watch 10 or 15 times, couldn't decide, so I don't know how the linesman with the sun in his eyes is going to tell."

Jets coach Phil Stubbins weighed in on the technology debate.

"If it's a split-second decision then the linesman obviously making that decision has hedged his bets and thought that it wasn't a goal definitively," he said.

"Obviously, the video would have shown it either way."
