Brosque says Asian Cup a blessing for Sydney FC

Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque said the AFC Asian Cup break was the best thing that could have happened to the team that had lost its way.

The Sky Blues kicked off the A-League season in blistering form and were unbeaten in their first six matches.

But a home defeat to Melbourne City on 2 November and a spate of major injuries were the precursor of a run of poor results that saw the side lose all its early momentum.

But the league's break for the Asian Cup gave Graham Arnold's men the opportunity to go back to the drawing board and regroup.

"The Asian Cup was a blessing for us," Brosque said.

"It gave us the chance to go back to what we were doing in pre-season and fix the things we were doing wrong.

"We brought in a few players and we had the time to work on our game.

"It definitely was a good break for us and I think our recent play is showing.

"At one stage around Christmas we went four games without scoring but now we have scored 15 in our last four games.

"The break was exactly what we needed."

Brosque left Sydney for Shimizu S-Pulse in 2011 as its chief goalgetter but he is finding goals much harder to come by on his return home after his foreign sojourn that also took him to Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates Pro-League.

So far he has netted only twice in 13 matches, which is well below his average.

Brosque is not the sort of player who would come up with the standard quote that failing to score does not bother him as long as the team wins.

It does bother him and he does not mind admitting it.

"Of course it's frustrating," he said.

"I am not getting as many scoring chances as I'm used to because Arnie wants me to play on the left side of our attack but I'm quite happy to do that.

"The older you get the more mature you become so you learn to adapt to the demands of the team.

"If we can win the title I would be happy to play my part in it.

"So it does not really matter how many goals I score in terms of the team's interests but, yes, I would like to get on the scoresheet more often.

"Hopefully I can finish the season with a few more goals."

One of two goals he scored this season was in the first derby against Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium, when the Sky Blues came back from two goals down to win 3-2.

On Saturday, Brosque will again lock horns with the Asian champion at Pirtek Stadium.

"I'd give anything for another winning goal in the derby," he said.

"The Sydney derby has become a truly big event with sellout crowds watching the first two derbies of the season.

"The first derbies came quickly and it's been a while now since we have played them.

"I'm looking forward to another great game."
