Football Federation Australia (FFA) has put any plans to reduce the foreign player cap per A-League club from five to four on the backburner until at least the 2017-2018 season.
The governing body had previously planned to introduce the reduction next season but a review by FFA's Technical Department and submissions from A-League clubs led to the change of heart.
The decision will be welcomed by most in the A-League with Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau declaring last year that any change to the quota would adversely affect the quality of the competition.
"For me, now the league is nice, the league has big value," Gombau said.
"The moment that you start to cut the numbers of the foreign players that come, maybe the level of the league decreases a little bit."
However, Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold - while in charge of Central Coast Mariners last April - said that the prevalence of foreigners in the A-League was hurting the development of Australian players.
Some have called for FFA to impose a a '4+1 rule' in the A-League - with one spot designated for a player from an Asian confederation country - in following with the AFC Champions League's '3+1 rule', but this remains just a talking point at the moment.
