Asian Cup set to leave great legacy for Australian football

Australia could celebrate one of the finest moments in its football history on Saturday night when it meets Korea Republic in the AFC Asian Cup final, but for Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou the entire tournament has been just as important.

"My pride comes from the fact that the game in this country has got a really big kick in this last month," Postecoglou said.

"Not just our games, but every game has been well supported.

"People have understood what joy and drama football can bring.

"And as a kid growing up in this country, nothing makes me happier.

"What it all means, win or lose, we'll figure it all out afterwards."

Defender Ivan Franjic appears to have won his battle with a hip injury, completing training on Friday.

Franjic's cool temperament, and that of his experienced teammates, will be vital against the Koreans in the cup final.

"We have some fantastic experienced players ... I don't think there's anything that I have seen to suggest anyone will freeze," Postecoglou said.

"It's a big game, it's a big day, there is always that possibility. But I have a great deal of faith in this group of players to perform the task."

The Socceroos boss said both Australia and Korea would have taken heart from their clash in the group stages, won by the visitor 1-0.

"At the end of it we lost, but we felt we performed really well on the night so from our perspective there were no negatives to come out of it," he said.

"In many ways it helped us because we were able to stay in Brisbane and didn't have to travel for the quarter-final.

"We left that game knowing that at our best, we can certainly match it with the Korean team.

"And I guess it was the same for them, they got the result so there were no negatives.

"I don't think it's going to have a great bearing on (the final). I really believe that regardless of who you play in a final, previous form becomes a little bit irrelevant just because of the occasion of a big game."
