Caravella fears for Jets players' careers

Newcastle star Zenon Caravella said there are a lot of "bewildered" and "devastated" players at the club as a crisis engulfs the Jets.

Caravella told The World Game he and other Jets players feared for their playing futures as the drama surrounding Nathan Tinkler's ownership of the club and the position of Phil Stubbins as coach explodes.

The Newcastle Herald reported on Wednesday afternoon that Jets assistant coach Clayton Zane, goalkeeping coach Neil Young and strength and conditioning coach Andrew Packer had all been sacked by Tinkler, effective immediately.

The report added that Stubbins, assistant coach Michael Bridges and physiotherapist Justin Dougherty had survived.

Later in the afternoon the Jets issued a media release that stated the club had "parted ways" with the trio and that the changes "form part of an internal club review".

Asked for his reaction to the news, Caravella said: "Of course it’s a shock. We recently lost Robbie (Middleby, as chief executive) and Ray (Baartz, as chairman) and now there are others. It’s a difficult situation and one that’s hard to comment on.

"The PFA has been always very, very supportive, but apart from that I don't know what to make of the situation.

"We're players who are trying to play and make a living, with mortgages to pay, bills to pay, mouths to feed, and we've got a lot of things going on in the background. It's extremely stressful for the players and extremely upsetting. We're bewildered by all of this.

"I can tell you I've had some conversations with some players and they're very, very, very worried about their futures. I'm an experienced player, but at the same time I'm concerned as well because this is my career.

"So, you know, you can print this or not, but there are a lot of devastated players here at the moment."

Last weekend's 7-0 loss to Adelaide United was the catalyst for problems between Stubbins and the playing group to come out into the open.

Stubbins has publicly reacted to player unrest by saying: "If they want me to just cave in – if that’s their agenda – then they are going to be disappointed.

"There are certain players here on decent coin, who I won’t name, who are giving no value for money to this club."

Caravella said the players wanted to keep training and playing for the club, but refused to comment directly on the relationship between the players and Stubbins.

"There was never going to be a player revolt, that was blown out of proportion," he said.

"We've always said we were going to go to training and train and put the effort in, because this is a strong playing group and there was never any talk of industrial action or a player revolt.

"As far as we're concerned we'll still go to training every day and show up and still put the effort in.

"There are a lot of things being portrayed in the media, but at the moment we, as players, we're fighting for our careers. There are a lot of things being reported, but we want the best for the club and that's the truth.

"The players are stressed. There are a lot of young players and a lot of experienced players and no-one can escape what's happening here, whether you're young or experienced. It affects every single person.

"We're fulfilling our contractual obligations. We're going to training and doing everything we need to do and as a team we're strong, we're sticking together.

"We were never going to revolt against the coach, that hasn't happened.”

Caravella said awful results like the one against Adelaide threatened players' careers.

"If you play well as a team, you're a chance of your career continuing. If you don't play well, and the team gets smashed 7-0, it makes it very difficult for everyone," he said.

"So we as players are committed to this club and we want to play well for this club, but it's a bit difficult at the moment."

Asked if he knew what the plan was regarding training or otherwise on Thursday, Caravella replied: "No idea what's happening tomorrow, no idea.

"As a group we're still going to training and fulfilling everything we need to do as players and the main message we as a group are getting across to everyone who has asked us, is that we want to play and we want to play well for this club, because these are our careers."
