Angered Tinkler sticks by Stubbins as Jets players prepare to go on strike

Newcastle Jets owner Nathan Tinkler has vowed to stand by coach Phil Stubbins, insisting the team is seeking to make him a scapegoat for its own failings.

Tinkler spoke out amid reports that the embattled club’s playing group had staged a crisis meeting on Tuesday aimed at bringing to a head its dissatisfaction with the tactics and methods of Stubbins, who took the reins at the start of the season and has presided over a disastrous run of results.

It is understood fed-up Jets players will show up but refuse to train on Wednesday, as they endeavour to force the club's hand and expedite the departure of under-fire Stubbins.

But a dismissive Tinkler outlined his own plans for the club and stuck by Stubbins, declaring: "We are not going to let a bunch of players - some of whom have 10 games or so left in their Jets careers – dictate the future of the coach and the club.

"Under the old regime, this sort of behaviour probably would have won the day for the players and the coach would go – but that’s not going to happen.

"The coach is staying and as for the players, they are playing for their spots.

"I have 15 of them off contract at the end of the season and I wish those guys would put the sort of effort on the field that they are obviously putting in off it in undermining the efforts of the club.

"Obviously that’s proven a bit too hard for some of them, so they are they are trying to find somebody else to blame. That seems to be a culture at the club, unfortunately.

"So they are not happy with the coach. Since when do players have to be happy with their coach?

"It’s unbelievable. I am sure the coach wasn’t too happy with their efforts at the weekend."

Tinkler was referring to Saturday's 7-0 capitulation to Adelaide United, a result which leaves the club with just a single win from 15 A-League matches as it languishes second bottom with only eight points.

"There is nobody more frustrated than me at what’s going on," added Tinkler.

"And I would say to every fan that as disappointing as the weekend was, just imagine if you had to pay these blokes.

"Watching them lose the way they did to Adelaide was appalling."

The Singapore-based Tinkler believes that Stubbins, in time, can take the Jets forward.

"I think Phil has a good direction at the club and knows what has to be achieved – unfortunately he inherited just about everything when he came to the club and has probably had trouble implementing the style of play he wanted.

"I think its fair to say that there are not too many of our squad that would get a start at Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory or Wellington Phoenix – the depth is not what we hoped it would be at the start of the season."

With scant resources to strengthen the squad in the short term, Tinkler said the club will likely have to “make do” as well as it can for the remainder of the season, adding: “There is not a lot left to salvage this season except for pride – and hopefully we can get some of that back in the jersey before the end of the year.

"Men usually find adversity a test and respond to it – but we don’t seem to have too many in Jets jerseys that want to do that at the moment."

Tinkler said an end of season clear out was imminent, declaring: “I have no doubt that’s what will happen – especially based on the efforts of the weekend.

“This is a team which has beaten some of the best in the A-league and has proven that they have the ability when they play together, but I didn’t see too much effort out there at the weekend."

Tinkler, in his new role as owner and chairman in the wake of the exit of Rat Baartz, has been overseeing a review into the direction of the club and what can be done to turn things around.

“We have gone through that process now and I guess a lot of the players who have grievances are aware of what’s going to come out of it," he said.

"You would only need to read the league ladder to understand that – this whole situation is an effort from some of them to push the blame onto somebody else.

“The process to find a new CEO (to replace Robbie Middleby who quit along with Baartz) is close to being finalised.

"We are on to a second round of interviews and can hopefully make an appointment next week.”

The Jets next play in the A-League at home on Friday 6 February against Brisbane Roar - LIVE on SBS ONE, HD and online from 7.30pm AEDT.
