How the A-League would look with local players only

The brief was simple: re-order the A-League squads with players born only in that region. No foreign players allowed, with only current A-League players eligible. The results are enlightening.

The World Game has gone through every A-League squad and re-allocated players based on where they were born. Foreign players weren't included and players eligible for Australia, born abroad, were allocated to the team in the region of Australia they first lived.

We then got our expert analyst, David Zdrilic, to select his starting 'eleven' for each team and give a few words on how it would do.

Startlingly, Central Coast Mariners didn't have enough local-born players in the league to fill half a team, but perhaps predictably, between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, there were enough players for four teams.

A-League expansion contender, Canberra, trumped Central Coast with five players - Steven Lustica, Kofi Danning, Jason Geria, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Carl Valeri - while Melbourne struggled to fill two teams, just scarping by.

We sent any player with a link to Melbourne Victory back there, while the other Melbourne-born players not currently at Victory went to City.

Shorn of their foreign stars, league heavyweights Adelaide United, Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar took on a completely different complexion, while a couple of surprise faces bolstered a Wellington Phoenix squad without the depth to compete with the powerful Sydney duo.

Cast your eye over our alternative line-ups and squads and see if you agree with our man Zdrila.

Adelaide United:

Squad: Brandon BORELLO; Anthony COSTA; Jordan ELSEY; Ben GARUCCIO; Craig GOODWIN; Paul IZZO; Bruce KAMOU; Nathan KONSTANDOPOULOS; Awer MABIL; Osama MALIK; Marc MARINO; Michael MARRONE; Stefan MAUK; Dylan MCGOWAN; Jacob MELLING; Daniel MULLEN; Mark OCHIENG; Allan WELSH

Zdrila's starting 'XI':

Zdrila says:

"The Reds would be an interesting mix filled with plenty of youth.  Will struggle to challenge some of the stronger more experienced squads."

Brisbane Roar:

Squad: Matt ACTON; Zach ANDERSON; Ross ARCHIBALD; Shannon BRADY; Luke BRATTAN; Josh BRINDELL-SOUTH; James BROWN; Corey BROWN; Daniel BOWLES; Zenon CARAVELLA; Isaka CERNAK; Nathan COE; Mitch COOPER; James DONACHIE; Matt McKAY; Golgol MEBRAHTU; Mitch NICHOLS; Joshua ROSE; Shane STEFANUTTO; Adam SAROTA; Patrick THEODORE; Michael THWAITE; David WILLIAMS.

Zdrila's starting 'XI':

Zdrila says:

"Apart from the two Sydney teams, Roar has the strongest squad to choose from, with plenty of depth and experience. It would be very solid at the back and strong in midfield. But wwould ill it have enough goals up front?"

Central Coast Mariners

Squad: Andrew REDMAYNE; Matt SIMON

Not enough players to fill a team

Melbourne City

Squad:

Dino DJULBIC; Diogo FERREIRA; Eugene GALEKOVIC; Jack HINGERT; John HUTCHINSON;  Josh KENNEDY; Patrick KISNORBO; George LAMBADARIDIS; Jamie McLAREN; Massimo MURDOCCA; Cameron WATSON

Zdrila's best 'XI':

Zdrila says:

"Despite only having 11 available players City is able to field a very strong side. If it can avoid injury to any player and if all the players can last the 90 in every game, this side could make the six."

Melbourne Victory

Squad: Nick ANSELL; Jordan BROWN; Leigh BROXHAM; Billy CELESKI; Christopher CRISTALDO; Kieran DOVER; Mate DUGANDZIC; James JEGGO; Nick KALMER; Vince LIA; Rashid MAHAZI; Dylan MURNANE; Andrew NABBOUT; Sasa OGNENOVSKI; Connor PAIN; Paulo RETRE; Matthew SPIRANOVIC; Michael THEO

Zdrila's best 'XI':

Zdrila says:

"Plenty of experience at the back and speed up front. Not as strong as the Sydney teams so will have to sit and use the pace up front to get in behind."

Newcastle Jets

Squad:  Nigel BOOGAARD; Nick COWBURN; Andre DURANTE; Sam GALLAWAY; Jason HOFFMAN; Andrew HOOLE; Ben KANTAROVSKI; Ben KENNEDY; Brandon LUNDY;  Jade NORTH; Jacob PEPPER; Taylor REGAN; James VIRGILI

Zdrila's starting 'XI'

Zdrila says:

"Plenty of defensive talent but a bit light up front. Sit back and catch them on the counter for this side."

Perth Glory

Squad: Mark BIRIGHITTI; Jack CLISBY; Danny DA SILVA; Matthew DAVIES; Jack DUNCAN; Scott GALLOWAY; Richard GARCIA; Brent GRIFFITHS; Rostyn GRIFFITHS; Chris HAROLD; Adrian MADASCHI; Scott NEVILLE; Brandon O'NEILL; Iain RAMSAY; Josh RISDON; Nikita RUKAVYTSYA; Tando VELAPHI; Riley WOODCOCK

Zdrila's starting 'XI'

Zdrila says

"Perth has A mix of youth and experience but just not enough depth."

Sydney FC

Squad: Kearyn BACCUS; Dean BOUZANIS; David CARNEY; Shannon COLE; Bruce DJITE; Cameron EDWARDS; Nicholas FITZGERALD; Sam GALLAGHER; Corey GAMEIRO; Joel GRIFFITHS; Antony GOLEC;  Labinot HALITI; Vedran JANJETOVIC; Matt JURMAN; Mark MILLIGAN; Aaron MOOY; Hayden MORTON; Matthew NASH; Chris NAUMOFF; Ivan NECEVSKI; Michael NEILL; Eric PAARTALU; Liam REDDY; Dmitri PETRATOS; Jacob POSCOLIERO; Sebastian RYALL; Matt SIM; Tom SLATER; Brendan SANTALAB;

Zdrila's starting 'XI'

Zdrila says

"Sydney has a cracking squad with plenty of depth. Mark Milligan is back and the Sky Blues have a strong front third, but not as deadly as Western Sydney Wanderers."

Wellington Phoenix

Squad: Kwabena APPIAH; Tyler BOYD; Michael BOXALL; Tom DOYLE; Louis FENTON; Jason HICKS; Michael McGLINCHEY; Glen MOSS; Matthew RIDENTON; Alex RUFER; Ben SIGMUND; Shane SMELTZ;  Archie THOMPSON

Zdrila's starting 'XI'

Zdrila says:

"Phoenix Can create a solid first 11 but will struggle in the depth department. The experience and goalscoring threat of Smeltz, McGlinchey and Thompson will be key while Moss and Sigmund will have to organise the back."

Western Sydney Wanderers

Squad: Daniel ALESSI; Terry ANTONIS; Pedj BOJIC; Eddie BOSNAR; Mark BRIDGE; Kerem BULUT; Nathan BURNS; Alex BROSQUE; Zach CAIRNCROSS; Nick CARLE; Connor CHAPMAN; Devante CLUT; Ante COVIC; Mitchell DUKE; Tarek ELRICH; Alusine FOFANAH; Rhyan GRANT; Hagi GLIGOR; Alex GERSBACH; Brendan HAMILL; Bernie IBINI; Scott JAMIESON; Tomi JURIC; Adrian LEIJER; Martin LO; Travis MAJOR; Yianni PERKATIS; Jaushua SOTIRIO; Lawrence THOMAS; Peter TRIANTIS; Glen TRIFIRO; Jason TRIFIRO; Danny VUKOVIC; Ruben ZADKOVIC

Zdrila's starting 'XI'

Zdrila says:

"Very strong line-up and plenty of depth on the bench. A solid backline with the A-League's best goalkeeper over recent years. Experienced midfield with the creativity of Brosque and Antonis provding plenty of service to a potent strike force of Burns, Juric and Ibini."
