Brosque warns of Abdulrahman threat

United Arab Emirates midfielder Omar Abdulrahman is the man standing between Australia and the AFC Asian Cup final, his former teammate Alex Brosque warned.

Australia plays UAE in the semi-final of the tournament in Newcastle on Tuesday and the Sydney FC captain said Abdulrahman must be stopped if the Socceroos are to reach their second final in four years.

Brosque and Abdulrahman were teammates when the Australian striker played for Al-Ain in the UAE from 2012 to 2014.

And he knows first hand what damage Abdulrahman can cause if allowed to dictate play.

"I obviously know quite a bit about the Al-Ain players in the UAE side, having played there for two seasons," Brosque said.

"Striker Ali Ahmed Mabkhout has banged in a few goals this year and is highly regarded but the man to watch is undoubtedly Omar.

"Everybody is talking about him and he has been fantastic in this tournament, a real joy to watch.

"I was really interested to see how he goes because it's one thing to do what he does in his league and another when he steps up on the world stage.

"All credit to him because he's doing it all over again in the Asian Cup too."

Brosque has been on the receiving end of Abdulrahman's sterling service and he has no doubt about the playmaker's ability to make it look so easy for strikers.

"He definitely can damage any opposition," he said.

"His major strength is that wherever you make a run and he cuts in on his left foot he will find you.

"He knows exactly where to put the ball because he has such a vast range of passing skills in his locker.

"And it does not matter where he's facing or what sort of angle he's got to play with he can put a ball anywhere, wherever he wants.

"He can put a striker through on goal several times in a match.

"And if Australia give him time to do that he will do what he's done all tournament."

So how do you stop him?

"The only way you can do that is to be on top of him and not let him move," Brosque said.

"Obviously you would not want to man mark one player but in general everybody on the field needs to know where he is.

"Someone has to be close to him and cut off any passes to him.

"If he gets any time and space on the ball he will do a lot of damage."

Brosque said that one weakness in Abdulrahman's game is he does not like physical opponents.

"He's not one of the biggest guys going around and he tends to be put off by physical rivals," he said.

"All players who like the ball and like space do not like the physical part of the game.

"So the Socceroos must make sure that as soon as he gets the ball they make him worry that somebody will be on him in no time.

"That's the only way to stop him."
