Socceroos happy to be playing in Newcastle

While AFC Asian Cup organisers have been questioned for awarding a semi-final to Newcastle and its 23,000-capacity stadium, the Australians aren't bothered.

After a Friday night of upset quarter-final results, Australia will meet the United Arab Emirates, who won a penalty shoot-out to knock defending champion Japan out of the title race.

Korea republic will meet Iraq in the other semi in Sydney on Monday night, after the Iraqis downed Iran on Friday night, also in a penalty shoot-out.

The Socceroos believe their raucous home support experienced so far in the tournament will continue in Newcastle.

"We're Australia and we represent the whole of Australia," defender Ivan Franjic said.

"It's great going to these areas so they can see their idols."

Had the Socceroos topped their group, they would have played their semi-final on Australia Day at Sydney's Olympic stadium which can seat more than 80,000 fans - but they didn't.

"I don't think anyone is too bothered about it," midfielder Massimo Luongo said.

"If we get a full stadium and it's 22,000 or whatever, it will be nice - a nice compact stadium and the fans will be right behind us.

"We're all from all over the place in Australia. As long as the fans get behind us, we will be right, it doesn't matter where we play."

Luongo said the Socceroos would embrace lofty expectations in the semi-final.

"We all feel like we're the underdogs even though we're in our own country and on our home soil," he said.

"That is a good thing.

"I don't think anyone is here for a semi-final or a third v fourth playoff. I'm not and I know the boss ain't thinking that way either."

The semi-final loser will feature in a play-off in Newcastle on Friday, with the winners meeting in the final in Sydney on Saturday.
