Juric not on the outer at Wanderers

Western Sydney chief executive John Tsatsimas says Tomi Juric's decision not to join Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua - a move that would have earned the Wanderers a huge transfer fee - won't result in him being on the outer at the A-League club when he returns from Asian Cup duty.

There has been speculation Australia striker Juric, who now has his sights set on finding a club in Europe, would only play a minor role in the remainder of Western Sydney's campaign this season as a result of the Chinese deal falling through and the Wanderers having signed other attacking players.

The new attacking players are only eligible for the club's upcoming Asian Champions League campaign at this stage, because the Wanderers A-League list is full at 23 players, but any of those ACL players could be added to the A-League squad if a vacancy arises.

Wanderers have added attackers Yojiro Takahagi and Kerem Bulut and defenders Sam Gallaway and Yusuke Tanaka for the ACL campaign. Midfielders Kearyn Baccus and Nicky Kalmar were signed as A-League injury replacements and for the ACL campaign.

Western Sydney was understood to be set to earn a transfer fee of up to $2 million for selling Juric to Shenhua in a deal that would have earned the player a minimum of $10 million over three years.

But Juric abandoned the idea of the switch at the last minute, apparently after taking advice from Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou and others that a European move would be better for his football.

Juric is only contracted to Wanderers until the end of this season and once that period is up he can leave the club without the Wanderers being able to receive a transfer fee.

Asked about the suggestion Juric's role at Wanderers would be drastically reduced as a result of recent developments, Tastsimas replied: "No, that's ridiculous.

"Tomi's our player and he's a quality player and a real professional and that would be far from what we're thinking.

"Why wouldn't you play him? You're cutting off your nose to spite your face if you don't. His status at the club hasn't changed. He's always been a favourite of ours.

"We've dealt with his overseas dip in the water and we look forward to having him back from the Socceroos and playing in the A-League. If anything changes regarding any moves for him in the future then it changes, but that's the same for every player.

"We've augmented our squad and improved our stocks with the Asian Champions League in mind and we're ready to roll on two fronts again."

Referring specifically to the Chinese interest in Juric, Tsatsimas said: "There were a couple of opportunities that were put forward, but those opportunities weren't finalised and that's all over now as far as we're concerned.

"We never factored Tomi leaving into the equation because it was never finalised and we'll continue with him."

Tsatsimas said the club would not hold it against Juric that his decision not to join the Chinese club would cost Wanderers a seven-figure transfer fee because "that was never our business model".

Western Sydney's campaign to defend the ACL title begins next month and Tsatsimas said that whether any of the players signed specifically for the ACL eventually joined the A-League squad as well depended on whether any vacancies opened up.

Current squad members Vitor Saba and Seyi Adeleke are out of favour at the Wanderers but are still part of the squad at this stage because no transfer opportunities that are suitable to both the club and the players have been realised.

Tsatsimas did not wish to discuss the Saba and Adeleke situations.

As far as the ACL campaign goes, Tsatsimas said: "It's nothing different to what we did last year with our campaign. We embarked on a similar recruitment process to assist both campaigns in which we're involved. A lot of exertion is required for these different competitions.

"The new players are eligible for the ACL. They haven't been signed for the A-League. What happens in the future we don't know, but they were signed for reasons to do with enhancing our ACL squad and dealing with the travel and extra load of matches."
