Jedinak admits he made mistakes in Socceroos win

Australia captain Mile Jedinak made a triumphant return to the Socceroos lineup in the 2-0 win over China, but the skipper conceded he may have been overzealous early on.

Jedinak admitted he was trying too hard to stamp his authority on Thursday's quarter-final, giving away possession a number of times as the Socceroos made a tense start.

"It is a little bit of that," he said.

"I was working my way into the game, of course. It's part and parcel of the game: if you try and force the issue, you're going to make mistakes.

"What was more important was the way we reacted, even under a little bit of pressure in that first half.

"We took that up a notch in the second half and some individual brilliance from Timmy (won it).

"But overall, the team performance was very, very disciplined - something I think we've been crying out for."

Jedinak missed Australia's last two group stage games but says he is ready to lead his country into a semi-final against either Japan or the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday in Newcastle.

Australia's midfield general will be better for his 90-minute run at Suncorp Stadium.

His recovery gives coach Ange Postecoglou the right kind of headache heading into the tournament's business end.

The only two certainties in midfield appear to be Jedinak and Massimo Luongo, who was again one of Australia's better performers against China.

Postecoglou handed Mark Bresciano his first start of the Asian Cup on Thursday but the veteran was a long way from his best and lasted just an hour before he was swapped for Mark Milligan.

The coach may look to fill the third midfield vacancy with Milligan or Matt McKay, who would both add some much-needed mobility against Japan or the Emirates, two teams that play intricate short-passing football.

Jedinak said he was always confident of returning from injury with the assistance of the national team's backroom staff.

"I've been working around the clock to get this right and it's a full credit to all the medical staff, pushing me, and me pushing them," he said.

"We've been in each other's hair the whole time.

"It's a real team effort.

"The boys have stepped up to the plate and I'm really grateful for that, for giving me another opportunity to get out there."
