The big match: Finkler holds key as Victory goes for Glory

The World Game looks at the A-League match of the round from several angles, incorporating the views of a key player from each side. This week it's the clash between top-of-the-table Perth Glory and third-placed Melbourne Victory at nib Stadium on Sunday.

Glory's Nebo Marinkovic and Victory's Gui Finkler have each had big impacts the two times these teams have met this season and they are again set to heavily influence the outcome of this latest clash.

When Glory beat Victory 4-2 in extra-time in a quarter-final of the FFA Cup in Perth in late October, it was a free kick from Finkler in the 92nd minute that went in and forced the game past normal time.

And it was a goal from Marinkovic in the 111th minute that gave Glory the two-goal buffer it then protected until the end.

When Glory again downed Victory in an A-League game the Victory took to Geelong on 2 January, it was Marinkovic that set up both his team's goals - first with a long ball through the air for Andy Keogh and second with a ground ball for Chris Harold.

Victory cut the two-goal deficit in half when Finkler went on to the ball inside the penalty box and Glory defender Scott Jamieson brought him down, resulting in a penalty.

Besart Berisha converted it, but Victory couldn't add to that and Glory won 2-1.

FINKLER ON MARINKOVIC

"He's a very good player and he's got a lot to do with how they play. You have to be very aware of him, but I think Perth are very good collectively, as a team.

"They're a physically strong team. They play hard and they have a good defence and they're the team to beat at the moment. Marinkovic is one of many good players they have."

PERTH GOALKEEPER DANNY VUKOVIC ON MARINKOVIC AND FINKLER

"They've been two of the most influential players in the league this season. For us, Marinkovic has been outstanding. He came to us halfway through last season and I think the reason he has excelled this season is that he got the full pre-season under his belt with us.

"He's a lot fitter than he was last year and he's able to really put a stamp on games, whether it be from the dead ball - I think we've scored the most goals from free kicks and corners and that has a lot to do with his delivery - or in open play, like he did in the game at Geelong.

"Two pin-point passes to open up the defence and when you've got players in great form up front, passes like that are as good as goals. He's been very important for us, as has Finkler for Victory, and Finkler is very dangerous from dead-ball situations as well.

"It's something we have to be aware of and not give away silly free kicks in dangerous areas outside the box."

Perth doesn't believe that three losses in three games (two in the A-League and the other in the FFA Cup final) to Adelaide United means Adelaide has got the on wood on it, so it also isn't getting carried away with having beaten Victory in two out of two.

VUKOVIC ON VICTORY

"You have to remember that in the FFA Cup we beat them in extra-time, so if that was a normal game it would have been a draw, but for some reason we have done well against them this season.

"Whether it's the way we line up against them, or mentally we lift even more against them, I'm not sure, but I know they're one of the best in the league  and we have to play at our best to get anything out of this game.

"The last game against them in Geelong, we won it in the first half-hour. We came at them really hard and they probably didn't expect that, so I'm sure on Sunday's they're going to be expecting something similar and will be ready for that.

"But we'recertainly looking forward to it again."

FINKLER ON GLORY

"They're the top-of-the-table team and if we want to get the top of the table we have to win games like this. I think we are the sort of team that can go over there and get the two points. They got the two points here, so there is no reason we can't do the same there.

"But it will be a really tough match. We've prepared very well this week and now we have to go out there and do things better than we did last time. There's no reason that what we do can't work, if we do it well."

There is a forecast high temperature of 32 degrees in Perth on Sunday and kick-off is at 5pm, so the heat has the potential to be a factor. But it will be the same for both teams and neither side is making a big deal out of it.

FINKLER ON THE HEAT

"I think it's important to concentrate on what you have to do and not worry about things like the weather. You can't use the weather as an excuse. It's just something that is out of your control and you have to deal with it."

VUKOVIC ON THE HEAT

"We're kind of getting used to playing in the heat. We certainly train in it regularly and I feel it's something that can favour us more that it will them.

"It's going to be a big game. It's billed as The Peoples' Game here in Perth and from all accounts ticket sales are through the roof, so we're hoping for a massive crowd on Sunday with the public holiday the following day."

Coming out of the mid-season break in the A-League, due to the Asian Cup, and heading straight into a big game like this has created a real buzz in both camps.

VUKOVIC ON THE CHALLENGE

"It doesn't get any easier for us. Last time we played them they had a few players out and I think they're going to be a lot stronger than they were in Geelong, but we'll be up for that. We're looking forward to it.

"We know that if we win we'll go seven points clear of Victory and our goal is to keep leaving other teams behind us and to get even further away from them."

FINKLER ON GETTING A RESULT

"It's one of the biggest games we can play and it's an opportunity for us to show we can perform well against the top side and get something out of the game, get as many points as we can.

"There's a lot of excitement at our club about this game. They'll be ready and we'll be ready. We're working hard on things at training and we know it's going to be a tough match, but we're looking forward to it and we believe we can do well in it."

SUMMARY

This will be another intriguing clash between these two sides. Victory is unbeaten in its last three A-League games in Perth, winning twice and drawing once, but there was only a one-goal difference in each of the two wins and Glory has obviously improved dramatically since.

Perth was unbeaten at home this season until Adelaide beat it 2-1 in the last round before the break. Glory will be very keen to atone for that, particularly in front of an anticipated big home crowd.

Much will depend on how Victory starts. Perth knows how to control a game from in front and its confidence will soar if it gets to the lead at home. Victory must be proactive, but without going crazy, in an attempt to get to the lead and force Glory to have to chase the game.
