Djeparov keen to avenge Doha disaster

Uzbekistan captain Server Djeparov said that he and his teammates would relish an opportunity to avenge one of his country's most humiliating defeats when the AFC Asian Cup kicks off in Melbourne on Friday.

Djeparov, one of Uzbekistan's greatest ever players, was in the team that crashed 6-0 to Australia in the semi-final of the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.

The Socceroos were in an unstoppable mood and ever since that Doha demolition, playmaker Djeparov has waited for a chance for his team to take revenge.

Uzbekistan is in Group B with Korea DPR, China and Saudi Arabia and will commence its bid to win the continental title for the first time with a match against the Koreans at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

Australia is in crossover Group A with Korea Republic, Oman and Kuwait, whom it meets in the opening match at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Friday.

"I don't want to think too much at the moment about the 6-0 result of four years ago," Djeparov said after training at Kogarah, where he finished the session practising his trademark free kicks.

"We are thinking mostly about the group stage. If we qualify for the next stage we then would think about Australia, Korea or whoever we might meet.

"We have three tough group games that we need to win and after that we will see. If we meet Australia we will accept the challenge, of course.

"If we get to meet the Socceroos we will be keen to show that we are a better team [than the Doha result would suggest].

Djeparov, who plays his club football for Seongnam in the Korea Republic, said this Uzbekistan team is one of the strongest in recent memory.

"We're a strong side this time and, of course, our focus is to win our group," he said.

"I will not say that we are strong enough to win the championship but if we win the title we definitely would be able to say that we are the strongest.

"Teamwork and team spirit are our best asset.

"I cannot tell you which is our major strength from a technical point of view. You'll have to watch us play and see for yourself."

Djeparov has faced Australian teams several times.

He played in the two 2010 World Cup qualifiers in Tashkent and Sydney and was in the Bunyodkor side that met Adelaide United in 2008 and 2012 in the AFC Champions League.

"The Australian team are a physically powerful side with a blend of technical players which makes them a strong combination," he said.

"Australia has a few young players and I can think of no better opportunity than the Asian Cup at home for them to further their careers."
