Brockie backs Phoenix for A-League grand final

Departing Wellington Phoenix striker Jeremy Brockie has vowed to return from South Africa to see his old team play in the A-League grand final.

Of course, Wellington has to make it that far first, but the team's revival under two-time A-League championship-winning coach Ernie Merrick has taken it to second place at the halfway mark of the season with still plenty of room left for improvement.

"The grand final is after the last game of the season for my new club," Brockie told The World Game. "Our season finishes on May 9 and the grand final is around a week later (17 May).

"I don't want to put any pressure on my old team-mates, but I think everyone can see how well the team is playing at the moment and there's no reason they can't keep the push going.

"I've asked (Phoenix supporter group) Yellow Fever to keep me a ticket for the grand final if the team makes it. I'll definitely be back to watch if that happens, whether it's in Wellington or Australia."

Brockie played his last game for Phoenix in the 3-0 win over Brisbane at Wellington on Sunday. He scored two goals - one from the penalty spot after he was brought down inside the box and the other with a smashing shot - and was afforded a tremendous send-off by the club and the crowd.

He has joined South Africa's SuperSport United, but because the competition over there is suspended for the African Cup of Nations he has a bit of time left to tie up loose ends at home before leaving with his wife, Jess, and their two children - Piper, two, and Oscar, three months.

"We're leaving in a bit under two weeks," he said. "My first game is on February 11, so I'll keep doing some training here before we head off."

Brockie has already had a long and interesting career that includes stints at five A-League clubs, but he is still only 27.

He says he and Jess are treating the move as a great adventure and that they are open-minded about where it might take them after his two-and-a-half-year contract with SuperSport United ends.

"It's the right time for a move like this, with our youngest child still a few years away from reaching school age," he said.

"We're going to experience a new culture, a different environment and get the opportunity to do some travelling.

It's a great move for us in so many ways. It's good to have the security that a contract of this length offers.

"When I'm coming towards the end of it, Jess and I will reassess. If it all works out well in South Africa it's possible we could stay there longer, or there might be an opportunity elsewhere overseas, or there's the possibility I could return to the A-League. I'd only be 30 by then.

"One thing I'm definite about is that I want to keep playing for the All Whites and help us qualify for Russia in 2018. I want to go to another World Cup."

Brockie said he approached Merrick before the start of the season to tell him he was keen to go overseas.

"I had a chat with Ernie and let him know that I wanted to see what other opportunities might be out there and that if something interesting came up I wanted to have a good look at it," he said.

"I've always wanted to play in a league overseas and when the chance to go to South Africa came up it was very appealing.

"Ernie has been very understanding. I was contracted until the end of the season at Wellington, but the club let me go early and I'm going to leave with great memories of the Phoenix.

"It's the club that I love and to be able to play in the A-League for a club from my own country has been really special for me."

Brockie spent two-and-a-half seasons at Wellington and admits it is hard to leave when the club is on the rise.

"It's exciting to be making a big move, but with Wellington getting great results and being second in the league it's a bit of a bitter-sweet feeling as well," he said.

"But I'll be keeping a close eye on the results and cheering them all the way. Ernie is done a fantastic job here, with the players he has brought in and the playing style he has introduced. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the rest of the season."

Brockie said his two-goal farewell for Wellington had given him a lot of confidence ahead of joining his new club.

"I feel like I'm hitting close to top form again after last weekend," he said. "It's great to get among the goals again. It's given me a big boost going into this new phase of my career."
