Phoenix concentrating on key areas to tame Roar

Wellington Phoenix's focus will again centre on a high-energy midfield effort when it takes on Brisbane Roar in Sunday's round 14 A-League match at Westpac Stadium.

Coach Ernie Merrick is looking for Phoenix, unbeaten in its last six matches and third on the ladder, to concentrate on control in a few key areas.

"What we need on the field is plenty of energy, particularly in the midfield - their game will revolve around that," he said after training on Saturday.

Roar has struggled for consistency in front of goal this season but showed distinct improvement in its 3-3 draw against Central Coast Mariners last week.

In contrast, Phoenix has found the net with ease and came through its last match in style, despite missing top scorer Nathan Burns and fellow striker Roy Krishna to international duty and injury respectively.

A Kenny Cunningham strike and two late goals to youngster Tyler Boyd gave Wellington a 3-1 win over Adelaide United in an occasionally fiery match which featured a sideline altercation after Phoenix defender Manny Muscat collided with United's Pablo Sanchez in a crunching tackle.

Merrick had no problem with the tackle, although Adelaide coach Josep Gombau took the chance to make his feelings clear to the Wellington bench.

"There was nothing in it - Josep was just disappointed he couldn't do his latest knee slide, which apparently involves a half twist, toes pointed, and one eye shut," Merrick deadpanned.

"Because he didn't win, he was unable to do that so I feel sorry for him. But it was good, because we fired up after that. It worked in our favour."

There's one change to Phoenix's squad for Sunday, with Jason Hicks replacing Tomy Doyle as Merrick looks to introduce another attacking midfielder to his line-ups.

Other than that, there'll be little difference in Wellington's approach.

"It will be about the processes we go through - the number of possessions we want, the successful completion of passes, about getting in the box, about organising defensively and in the midfield, and the backline staying high," Merrick said.

"We arrange our strategy so we've got always got a couple of free players that don't have to do too much defensive work.

"I don't want our strikers chasing fullbacks into the back third, so even if things are going against us, we're dangerous on the break."
