Wanderers to investigate Cole's heated clash with fans

Western Sydney Wanderers will investigate a post-match incident in which members of club's Red and Black Bloc vented their displeasure at the players.

After disgruntled fans allegedly yelled at the players, defender Shannon Cole tried to placate them by telling them the players were trying their hardest.

Officials suggested some fans weren't impressed with Cole's explanation, with one apparently trying to climb the fence, to be held back by security staff.
It was a rare crack in the normally totally united show of support the Wanderers get from their passionate fans.

Coach Tony Popovic remains unshakeable in his belief that Western Sydney will turn things around if it keeps persisting.

He believes he has seen enough in the past two games to suggest Wanderers about to embark on a mid-season surge similar to that produced in their inaugural season.

His biggest concern remains the side's inability to find the back of the net.

It has gone seven hours since its last goal and has netted a league-low six times.

With Tomi Juric on international duty and Brendon Santalab injured, Popovic is struggling to find a reliable and regular finisher.

Juric and Mark Bridge are joint top goal scorers with just two each, but the latter hasn't found the net since round two.

Nikita Rukavytsya and Labinot Haliti both missed a couple of good chances against the Mariners to continue their scoring droughts.

Rukavytsya hasn't netted in seven starts and two substitute appearances this season, while Haliti remains goalless after five run-on games and five off the bench.

"We just need the ball to somehow go in," Popovic said.

"I'm sure from there, as all good strikers will tell you, once that first one goes in they usually go on a roll and everything they touch goes in.

He described the debut of midfielder Nick Kalmar as very pleasing and didn't rule out making more signings in the January transfer window.

Imports Vitor Saba and Seyi Adeleke were both left out of the team, fuelling further speculation they could be on their way out of the club, though Popovic said they could be considered for next Tuesday's home game against Melbourne Victory.
