Brockie hopes to rediscover the midas touch

Wellington Phoenix's restless striker Jeremy Brockie believes a “change of scenery” in South Africa will enable him to rediscover his goalscoring touch and rekindle his hopes of playing in a second FIFA World Cup.

Brockie will play his last game for the A-League's surprise packet in the home match against Brisbane Roar on Sunday before he jets off to Pretoria to join ambitious club SuperSport.

Brockie has signed a two-and-a-half-year year with an option of another year.

He said he hoped that a grey moment in his career would be revived in the rainbow nation.

“I felt I definitely needed a change of scenery to rediscover my goalscoring form,” he said as he prepared for his final game.

“Game time was drying up, goals were not coming regularly and I was not fitting in a style of play.

“These factors were all part of my decision.

“SuperSport showed a lot of interest in me and worked hard to get a deal done which makes a player feel very wanted.

“I always wanted to play overseas also and I'm looking forward to a new challenge to get my goalscoring form back.

“I spoke to Ernie Merrick before the start of this season and let him know of my intentions to explore other opportunities.

“He understood my reasons and he helped me out a lot.

“Unfortunately, I couldn't adjust to his style as much as I would've liked and he doesn't really play with a central striker so I think it's the best outcome for everyone.

“I have signed a deal that gives me great security leading up to Russia 2018.

“I had options in Asia also but they were only one-year offers.”

Brockie said his final match in his home town, Wellington, would be emotional because in two and a half seasons with Phoenix he established a strong rapport with the fans and particularly his team-mates.

“It was a hard decision to leave the club,” he said.

“I'm going to miss the boys lots and I have made lifetime friends here. I'll be back when they are in the grand final watching from the stands.

“There is something special developing at the moment and Ernie has made some great signings.”

So can Phoenix, which caused a major surprise by beating red-hot Adelaide United 3-1 at Coopers Stadium in its last match, complete an extraordinary fairytale and win the championship?

“We have won four games on the road now including wins over Adelaide and Sydney FC which are hard places to get results,” he explained.

“The way we are defending at one end and scoring lots of goals, I think teams will not be taking Phoenix lightly.

“I honestly believe they can go all the way but there's still a long way to go.

“I will be watching with a lot of interest when I'm gone and still support the boys from afar.”

Brockie said he fell in love with South Africa when he was a member of New Zealand's squad that took part in the 2010 World Cup.

“South Africa is a very beautiful country and a lot of people speak English which will also will help my family settle quickly,” he said.

Brockie played only a minor role in New Zealand's three group matches in which it remained unbeaten and was also involved as the All Whites missed out on Brazil 2014 after they were outclassed by Mexico in a playoff.

The striker is determined to give himself the best chance of making Russia 2018 his international swansong.

“I'd love to play in Russia,” he said.

“We have a great national squad with some quality players. I hope I can get back to scoring goals and keep myself in the national team frame.

“Having a taste of 2010 makes me want more in 2018.”
